NY senator touts former TN senator as someone other candidates should worry about (Fred Alert!)
Staten Island Advance ^ | June 24, 2007 | Tom Wrobleski

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Watch out for Fred Thompson.

That was Sen. Chuck Schumer's advice for those running for president, especially those seeking the GOP presidential nomination, including former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"The person I'd worry about on the Republican side if I were Giuliani, or a Democrat, is Thompson," Schumer told us during a recent visit to Staten Island.

Schumer explained: "The best Republican formula for them is a conservative who seems to be a nice, real person, as opposed to a hard-edged person. And that's how Thompson appears."

Not that we should take that as a knock against Giuliani, who can be a little, well, intense.

"I've always gotten along well with Giuliani," said Schumer. "I worked with him on the crime bill and many other things. The question is: Is his stand on choice going to hurt him in the country at large?"

Schumer said he didn't think that Sen. John McCain of Arizona or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were going to end up doing that well in the GOP race.

We asked Schumer what he made in particular of McCain, the onetime GOP heir apparent whose campaign never really seemed to catch fire even before Republicans started abandoning him over the immigration bill.

"In 2000, he was the big independent," said Schumer. "For some reason, now he embraced George Bush. And Bush's popularity is low."

Regardless of who the GOP candidate turns out to be, Schumer said 2008 is shaping up to be "a good Democratic year."

"The average middle-class person, for the first time in a while, is saying, 'I may need some help from the government,'" to pay for health care, a home or their children's tuition, he said...

Chucky’s idea of a good Democrat candidate is that he or she be a crook. He doesn’t think too much beyond that. He understands crooks.

It’s amazing that everyone either thinks that support for Bush is hurting McCain, or that they can convince people that such support (outside the immigration bill) is what’s hurting him. It’s McCain-Feingold and his “Gang of 13” activities that killed his support. Supporting the surge was bringing him back up. His immigration bill support is what killed any chance of a recovery.

Also, was legal immigration supported by the left or right back during the days of Ellis island?

“The average middle-class person, for the first time in a while, is saying, ‘I may need some help from the government,’” to pay for health care, a home or their children’s tuition.

No one is entitled to other people’s money to pay for anything, and if the government would butt out of housing, health care, etc, no one would need it because taxes would go DOWN, and competition would insure fair prices.

He understands crooks.

Perhaps...because he IS a crook?

Birds of a feather flock together...in the U.S. Senate!

No amnesty for incumbents. This includes YOU, Schumer!

Chucky’s idea of a good Democrat candidate is one that is a socialist. He’s supporting socialist Hillary Clinton for president. Chucky doesn’t understand socialism, which is why he’s such a big fan of it.

McCain, the onetime GOP heir apparent

When was this? I don't remember ever thinking or hearing (from anyone outside the MSM) that McCain was the "heir apparent." Was there ever a time when the GOP base was ready to rise up in favor of McCain?

They’re just NOW figuring out Fred Thompson’s a threat? Distracted by his own disastorous amnesty bill, probably.

The MSM always tried to pick the GOP nominee, they want to think they’re omnipotent.

Hey, Chuckie, you're a putz. D'Amato was right. I'm middle class, and I neither need or want governments help. With anything. I pay my own kids' tuition, and I buy my own health care. And, guess what? Neither I nor the two kids ever went to your sub-standard public schools. So shove that too.

Why don't you go back to Brooklyn and chase ambulabces?

How he "appears"? That's how he is.

It's hillary who tries to appear to be something she isn't.

A person.

Schumer has calculated that Thompson can be beaten by a democrat. Politicians at that level never promote foes who they believe will dethrone them.

“’I may need some help from the government,...”

Yep! Just give back to me what government, at all levels, has taken from me for the past 50 years, with interest. I can do very, very well with that.

“His immigration bill support is what killed any chance of a recovery.”

You’re probably right. Though I heard another Republican pundit again today say that Thompson is the McCain that CAN win. I suppose that means their positions, at least on most issues, don’t differ much. Maybe Thompson will pick up McCain as his running mate.

Fred Thompson needs to get in the race NOW to be evaluated in how he’ll hold up. Hype doesn’t win elections. He is failing miserably in proving himself to be a leader and having substance. And the GOP is setting itself up for the same old, same old disappointment.

What exactly is this Fred worship based on??!! Not like he has ever proven himself. We haven’t even had the opportunity to witness him campaign and get a true evaluation in how he’ll hold up. The party is in for a wake up call.
