Romney: Attacks On Mormon Religion Troubling
CBS 4 MIAMI ^ | 23 JUNE 2007 | AP

Posted on 06/23/2007 1:28:02 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

(AP) SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney said Saturday that criticism of his Mormon religion by rival GOP presidential campaigns is happening too frequently.

“Clearly, any derogatory comments about anyone’s faith—those comments are troubling. The fact they keep on coming up is even more troubling,” Romney said during a fundraising trip in the home state of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Mormon church is one of the fastest-growing religions and claims about 12.5 million members worldwide. But many evangelical Christians in crucial primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina consider the faith a cult.

Romney’s remarks follow an apology from GOP rival John McCain’s campaign for comments about the Mormon church allegedly made this year by a volunteer.

Also recently, Republican presidential hopeful, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, issued a similar apology for a campaign worker’s e-mail to Iowa Republican leaders that was an apparent attempt to draw unfavorable scrutiny of Romney’s religion. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani apologized after the New York Sun noted that a campaign aide had forwarded to a blogger a story about unofficial Mormon lore. Legend has it that a Mormon would save the Constitution, the story said. The campaign aide passed the story along with a note: “Thought you’d find this interesting.”

Romney said in a large presidential race there always will be some volunteers or workers who cannot be controlled. But he said the difference between derogatory comments that originated from the McCain campaign and others is that the Arizona senator has not personally apologized to him.

“In the case of Senator Brownback and Mayor Giuliani ... they called immediately. They each spoke with me personally. I don’t have any issue with that at all,” Romney said.

He said McCain “can do whatever he feels is the right thing. There’s no need for me to suggest how people respond to things that go on in the campaign.”

Tucker Bounds, a McCain campaign spokesman, said the McCain campaign has already apologized.

“It’s a very sincere apology. There is absolutely no place for those type of comments in our campaign,” he said.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, said he had not spoken with McCain since the last presidential debate, on June 5.

Romney used a fundraiser hosted by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller to criticize the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. It banned unregulated, unlimited contributions from corporations, unions and wealthy individuals to national political parties and federal candidates.

“The bill ought to be repealed,” he said. “It’s been the wrong course for American campaigns.”

Romney said he favors unlimited donations as long as they are immediately disclosed on the Internet.

Romney was attending fundraisers in Salt Lake City and in Logan on Saturday.

I was talking about Rudy Giuliani.

But if you want to be rude when you don’t even read through responses to see what they were responses to (as it were) feel free.

>> “Jehovah Witness?”
> I don’t think that would be a problem.

Ok, let’s try Hare Krshnas. If Romney were a Hare Krshna, would that matter?

(They have good food, they are happy people, their music is kinda fun, and aside from being a bloody nuisance at the airport the Hare Krshnas are generally decent folk...)

Or what about if he were a Wiccan? You know: stand around in a circle in the cold winter air, butt-naked and praying to Gaia...

Any issues if Romney were one of these folk?

Regarding the second question, I wonder where they believe Satan came from?

Yeah, sure. :)

I want to be fair. There are non-Mormon sources which provide an even handed look. Contrary to popular belief, Mormon belief tends to be diverse and personalize on many off the controversial points (which by the way tend not to be the basics of what we love to teach and edify — talking about the role of Jesus’s sacrifice for sin and death tends to be our topics of obsession) and when I see an article that is so one sided and dismisses other notable opinions then it is usually a red flag.

> Romney and the Mormon apologists say different, of course, but Mormonism is very similar to Islam.

Huh????

I defy you to outline the similarities. Support this silly assertion please.

You ask why there is no concern recgarding Harry Reid as a Mormon versus concern over Romney as a Mormon. It is the difference between being a Senator (barely known with little impact on the popular consciousness) and President (the biggest figure in American culture). If a Senator is a little wacky there are 99 other Senators. The difference in impact is comparable to being hit by a bicycle versus being hit by a railroad train.

I never said Jehova, did I?

Besides, dont answer me, answer the book of Mormon, Doctrines and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price.

I am not the author of it, Joseph Smith is, and he made up such fanciful tales that to believe what he wrote is to believe in a cult.

Joseph Smith even wrote that men live on the moon. Are you going to deny that, also?

I do have another question: You said that Mormonism didn’t teach the pre-existence, now that I posted the facts, are you reconsidering the truthfulness of LDS doctrine?

I hope so, and I will try to help you in any way I can to leave

The difference is not one of theology, it is of truth versus lunacy.

LDS doctrine is so far removed from the truth that I cannot trust a person who believes it.

So idolators get a Hmmmmm in your books, and Witches get a clear “no”...

You have an interesting world view, that much is certain. And your views on the Falun Gong? If Romney were a Falun Gong, would that matter to you?

Yes, Decker had serious problems.

But unlike the LDS, he never claimed that his words were from God Himself like the LDS does.

Especially the part where men are supposed to live on the moon.

Now, just what is this planet/star KOLOB?

I disagree with mormonism and believe that it is a cult. I believe that those under the influence of mormonism are held in darkness. But that does not make me a mormon hater. On the other hand, I think that anyone it is legitimate to question the judgment of someone who is in this thing.

Better still, give Remedial English a shot. Read the following passage carefully and slowly for comprehension. It was my well-articulated answer to your question. Pause if you need to, in case your lips get tired. I answered:

>> No. There would be plenty of other good reasons for disqualifying Mr LaVey as candidate for POTUS. Religion would not play a role in my decision.

So again I ask you, what part of “NO” do you not comprehend? When I said “Religion would not play a role in my decision” what part of that was ambiguous or confusing?

your fundamentals still believe that Jesus, Satan, Me, and YOU came from the same person, the perfected flesh Elohim as our Father.

You just placed yourself equal to Jesus...or is it Satan?

Prove to me which is true.

Not trying to be rude, but these are LDS doctrines, and just because you are a spiritual child does not take away the analogy of being brothers to Jesus and Satan at the same time.

That is insanity, not religion, unless you still think Baal worship is a viable religion as long as they dont throw children into the fire...

“I think that is the idea.”

You really think Romney wants people to search “Mormon Religion” on the Internet?

I doubt that because of what will come up is pretty radical stuff.

Sorry, that does not answer the question, but it was a good bait and switch.

If mormans point to the scripture in Isaiah as the basis for saying that the tablets found by Joseph Smith were inspired by God (i.e., the familiar spirit speaking from the dust), further if they believe scripture is consistent, then how do they get around the fact that the Bible clearly says a familiar spirit is evil?
