WASHINGTON - In an attempt to derail the compromise immigration bill working its way through the Senate, a group of House Republicans unveiled an alternative measure Tuesday that takes a harder line against immigration that would block illegal immigrants from becoming citizens while directing the Bush administration to enforce current laws.
Called the Secure Borders FIRST Act, the new bill focuses on improving security at the border, stiffening sanctions for employers who hire illegal immigrants, and establishing a market-based temporary guest worker program, which would allow immigrants into the country on 10-month renewable visas. It also increases penalties for gang membership and identity theft, and establishes English as the official language of the United States.
It is a direct answer to the Senate bill, which mandates stepped-up border security but also puts the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants currently in the United States on a pathway to citizenship.
Members of the Congressional Immigration Caucus, a House consortium that opposes illegal immigration, made no effort to disguise their hope that their measure, which will be officially introduced later this week, will impede passage of the Senate bill.
"What we want to do is stop the Senate amnesty bill in its tracks right now," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. "If Congress is serious about border security and immigration control, then this is the solution."
The measure is also a direct challenge to President Bush, who sees immigration as a legacy issue and has supported the Senate bill as a means of achieving that goal. The Senate bill, which was nearly killed two weeks ago, will face a critical juncture later this week, when lawmakers are to begin considering a list of 22 amendments, the final potential changes to the bill.

CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!
WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!
Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.
He’s trying to out-do Carter in the legacy category.
Votes.
I think he wants to the the founding father of the North American Union.
Alice, the President doesn't see amnesty as the problem. it's just one step in the destination.
I don't KNOW of course, but I think that he sees the North American Union as something that history will prove him right about and all of these intermediate steps are simply signposts on the path to that.
He's erasing the borders.
He's allowing a free-flow of labor.
He's allowing all mexican trucks on US highways.
He's all but erasing American citizenship. Surely you heard Reid the other day. These illegals are simply "undocumented Americans." if you follow that crazy logic far enough, EVERYBODY is an "undocumented American" therefore EVERYBODY is an American and the value of being an American citizen decreases as a result.
In fact, if you look close enough there's a little blurb in this monstrous abomination that fast tracks the NAU.
THAT's where the President's eyes are fixed, not amnesty.
He's simply ignoring the pain and hardship that are going to be felt by WE THE PEOPLE in the process of creating his one country solution.
My post immediately above might give a shot at this question.
Great minds, mom, great minds.
I think that when a sitting President will not listen to the voice of the people and continually goes out and pushes a proposal that would reward criminal behavior,Flood our social services, and create a voting block dedicated to reacquiring large areas of our country. Then as bitter as it seems I think the time has come for members of his party to approach him and suggest that they will introduce a motion for his impeachment on the basis of his not defending the security of the U.S. That by not securing our borders and enforcing our current laws the security of the nation is in dire peril. What good is it to fight them on foreign lands but let them in unfettered through our open borders.Maybe the thought of his own party impeaching him would shock him into action. Every politician needs to remember the preamble to the Constitution starts We the People Not We the elected few. I am a Republican but I am not an idiot I refuse to follow blindly what any politician proposes without thought and speaking out either in support or opposition. That is my right I served and fought in combat for this country and I refuse to surrender it to any politicians even ones from my own Party. President Bush has been a great leader and the majority of his programs have been outstanding but on immigration and amnesty he is crossing the line into that realm where the security of our nation outweighs allegiance to a party that is out of touch with the will of the People.
He's already there. He can stop already.
Just another step to erasing the border
How can he be fighting the WOT on one front and leaving the US so vulnerable on the home front. Oy.
Thanks
Re: The Secure Borders FIRST Act
Has this been officially been introduced in the House? If so, what’s the # assigned to it. Did a search and couldn’t find anything.
Peter King just sent a message to the White House. And I’ll be damned if it ain’t the sweetest music.
I’m going to his website right now and thank him. God bless you Peter King!
Can you provide a link to Peter King’s website, please? Thanks!
I am tired of these egomaniacs trying to write their epitaph. Does anyone think that these Presidents looked to there legacy, Lincoln, Washington, Truman, Reagan? I doubt it.
This is a recent ego trip and everyone wants to leave a mark. Heck Bush can pee on the corner fire hydrant. Great mark.
Gee, George, it’s always those bloody Reichstags that get in the way. But not to worry, if you don’t have a match handy - you’ve always got NSPD 51.
How do I become an “undocumented American” so my son can go to any college in the US and pay “in-state” tuition? And so I can stop paying for medical insurance and have you taxpayers pay for it instead? And so I can get help in my next home purchase?
Role of the executive office: The Laws issued by the Legislature must be complied with exactly. It is the President's job to Preserve, protect and defend them while executing them faithfully and it's the Judiciary's job to act as competent administrators to see that all parties are in compliance with the Constitution.
This is what has everyone's blood boiling, Bush shouldn't need directing to do his sworn duty.
