California advances bill to sterilize pets

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- California may become the only U.S. state to require the sterilization of pets under a bill passed by the state Assembly, pitting dog and cat lovers against animal rights activists.

"It's a horrific bill," said Maureen Hill-Hauch, executive director of Castleton, New York-based American Dog Owners Association, adding that enforcement of the bill in theory could wipe out California's dog population.

And it also seems unconstitutional.

And since when did the poiticians in CA follow the Constitution?

Let’s sterlize all chronic welfare recipients....THEN we can discuss dogs and cats.

I doubt even if this bill passes that CA will have a shortage of mix breed dogs. Euthanizing 500,000 dogs a year can't be good for "hybrid vigor" either.

Get a handle on the problem first.

I didn't read the bill, but I would assume there's a "Breeder License" that will conform to registry standards. I'm for spaying, neutering and culling. I'm no fan of government compulsion, but that's the nature of the Beast. And no doubt there's a pet overpopulation problem.

Ok first of all is it just me or does it seem like Hillary Clinton is advancing our country to socialism.

I highly doubt it.

The bill seems statist, but the same people who bitch and moan about CA infringing on their rights expect the state to maintain, care for, and euthanize the millions of dogs that don't have homes.

Anyone outside of a professional breeder who doesn't bother to spay or neuter their pets is at the very least irresponsible. If the government has to use state funds to clean up after your mess, expect them to come and try and tax you for it or pass some kind of compulsory law; its to be expected....especially in California.

There are plenty of other registries that promote performace rather than conformation. And if you are a breeder, I don't think this bill (haven't read it) says you must comply with a particular breed standard.

How can that be since purebreeds are already inside the budgets of many families?
