Radio station WIOD likely will remain Broward County's official channel for emergency information despite concerns it is also home to conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
County commissioners said they were deluged with complaints from throughout the country Wednesday after they questioned whether to cut their ties with the station because of their dislike for Limbaugh. By the end of the day, a majority of commissioners vowed to renew WIOD's agreement next week.
The deal with WIOD, AM 610, would ensure news conferences and other critical announcements are broadcast live during hurricanes and other emergencies.
Kristin Jacobs and Ilene Lieberman, commissioners who served as mayor during hurricanes in 2004 and 2005, came to the defense of WIOD. They were absent from Tuesday's meeting because they were in Tallahassee talking to state lawmakers about tax reform legislation.
"If your roof gets blown off, do you really care if the radio station that is giving you the information that you need also carries Rush Limbaugh?" Jacobs asked. "I don't think so. I don't agree with that man's philosophy and I don't listen to him, but I'm not going to not choose WIOD because of it."

Yea! Common sense won out! It just took a lot of people to point out their... partisan foolishness.
I think they were more likely shown the light by some lawyers.
Or a lot of freepers!
I live here and registered my opinion
Liberals are full of sh!t when they talk about diversity
Exactly what I said should be the main ctrieria in selecting a station. "coverage"
And the best signal and power redundancy for the given need. The best should be the criteria, not the format. Heck, if the local rap station is the best use it, but provide for the citizens first.
“As a native Floridian I am writing you to express my disgust with the possibility you may not broadcast emergency weather alerts on the strongest radio station because of your political affiliation.
I guess to hell with the safety of the good citizens of Broward County and surrounding Floridians.
At least now we know where your priorities are. THEY MOST CERTAINLY ARE NOT WITH THE THE SAFETY OF THE CITIZENS OF FLORIDA DURING AN EMERGENCY.
MORON!!”
Liberals: Feelings Matter! (And we think our feelings matter more than yours!)
What the twit was saying in essence was: “I hate Rush Limbaugh so much that I would rather have citizens die than renew a contract with the station that might save their lives.”
Rush’s comment on this was right on target: if they are truly concerned about his program, they should schedule the briefings so that it is pre-empted.
Isn’t this the sentiment for all who disagree or are the “deniers” of the left?
They don’t represent you or I, and most definitely don’t care about our well being. They would be happy if we all just died and went away. The only thing they want from is is our tax revenue and THAT never seems to be enough!
They need to have an agreement with every radio station.
Has that airhead Ritter had any other lame comments since the story broke?
The people of that county need to be very, very concerned at the childish level of thinking of their county commissioners. It’s just childishness—”I have the power, so now I’m going to run this place to suit myself.” Scary.
"WIOD announced today that it was cancelling its contract with Broward County to broadcast official emergency notices, because the county commisioners were all stupid liberals with whom it was impossible to work ."
The Dems aren’t thinking straight on this one. If there is a local weather emergency, the Public Service stuff is going to knock Rush off the air — THAT is something they SHOULD want.
Here was the strategy:
They give the contract to a liberal station. Then they dump a whole ton of free taxpayer money into the station to ensure its survival for the good of the citizens.
I just left a very pointed voicemail for Ritter.
