Wednesday, June 13, 2007 1:26 p.m. EDT Cancel Rush Limbaugh Or Lose Contract
The government in Broward County, Fla., is seeking to cut ties with a local radio station because it also broadcasts Rush Limbaughs show.
Station WIOD AM-610 has been the official channel for emergency information from the county government for the past year. But the County Commission, made up of all Democrats, refused to renew the relationship on Tuesday.
Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want the county to be linked to a station "thats out of step with area politics, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
She cited talk shows hosted by conservatives Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIODs partnership with Fox News.
"They have every right to speak, but we dont have to do business with them, she said.
But Ken Charles, WIODs director of AM programming, told the Sun-Sentinel: "Its a shame that people would let politics get in the way of saving lives in a hurricane.
The countys contract with the station was about to be rejected when commissioners decided to delay a final decision until next week.

You know what? Substitute the word Jews for Rush. See how that works.
Would broward county rats refuse a cost-free contract?
Doesn’t it happen every single time? “You may say anything you like - as long as it agrees with what we think.”
By God, but Democrats are angry and bitter people.
As I recollect, WIOD had a pretty strong signal, and it would be in the public interest to broadcast such weather information over a powerful station.
But, apparently, bitterness and anger trumps public safety.
Now THAT is a shame.
So because of politics the county government will switch to a radio station with a smaller audience? They are more interested in pushing their politics than their constituents safety? Shouldn't get emergency broadcasts to the most people be the primary concern? Sounds like a campaign message for the next local election.
I thought this was about Weather Warnings and saving peoples lives? Not about "WE"
According to Arbitron, WIOD’s also the highest rated news/talk radio format station. Broward’s looking to shoot itself in the foot.
How bizarre. The media, which supposedly lives and dies by the concept of free speech, overtly censors broadcast. Oh, yeah... I forgot. Free speech is only for liberals.
No, they're not. No more than Republicans would be, were they to decide to defund PBS. Of course, whenever Republicans try to defund PBS, the left makes just that charge.
Could it be a plot to keep county Republicans in harm’s way when the next hurricane comes around?
Let as many of us, good freedom loving Americans, give them a reality hit by smacking down their foolish ideas about limiting free speech.
Sorry to point this out, but 560-AM is the best ratings station in the area of Broward County (and Miami-Dade & Palm Beach), thanks to a guy named Neal Rogers.
610-WIOD is a popular station, but 560’s numbers during the same time as Rush are WAAAY above Rush.
Now, that being said, I just shook my head and said, “That’s South Florida for you...” because I listen to Rush everyday, and am a Rush baby.
And a BIG however is this: If 610-WIOD decides to drop Rush (which they won’t because he is a big part of their advertising push), 1290 out of West Palm Beach also broadcasts Rush.
Me too...
I already posted the address and wrote her. But thanks for the link.

Gee, isn’t this the kind of thing that Ray Nagin was accusing the Bush administration of doing - purposely letting people die because they didn’t like where they were in society’s fabric?
So, the Broward County government wants conservatives to die during an emergency? [hyperbole off]
But there is a point to be made here with their tactics, eh?
So it acceptable for government to awarded contract based on politics...
Can my local city council kick out the local cable company because that carry Bill Maher’s HBO show or MSMBC Keith Oberman?...
