Broward may cancel deal with radio station because it airs Rush Limbaugh
Sun-Sentinel ^ | 6/13/07 | Scott Wyman

Rush Limbaugh has long been a thorn in the side of liberals, but now, because of him, some Democratic politicians don't even want to join with a local radio station to broadcast hurricane information.

Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Limbaugh's talk show.

Commissioner Stacy Ritter said she did not want to support a station that's out of step with area politics. Ritter, a Democratic stalwart in the state Legislature before being elected to county office, cited talk shows hosted by Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and WIOD's partnership with Fox News.

The deal with WIOD would ensure that news conferences are broadcast start to finish live from the county Emergency Operations Center in Plantation. Emergency managers became concerned during hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 that radio and television stations preempted their announcements in favor of news out of Miami

I’ll be honest. The free market would take care of it. No listeners = no revenue, the station would go broke. Apparently some body listens to Rush in Broward since he is still on and the station seems viable. We conservatives are much more tolerant and would just listen to something else, safe in the knowledge that the liberal agenda doesn’t sell on the radio.

From the article:

“The deal with WIOD would ensure that news conferences are broadcast start to finish live from the county Emergency Operations Center in Plantation.”

IOW - If Rush was on at the time of a news conference, then Rush would not be broadcast; the Emergency Operations news conference would.

Our county commissioners don’t believe in freedom of speech any more than Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

I’ll bet they demand an Air America station be the only one to carry storm news. That would lead to millions being zapped during the next hurricane.

I know, but how would you know it was on except by listening to it and waiting for it to start?

I agree that if they have the strongest signal they should carry it, but I still think that if the shoe was on the other foot we wouldn't be complaining about dropping an ultra-liberal station. At least they were honest in telling people why they wanted the change of stations, I at least can respect them for admitting the truth and not fabricating a bunch of lies.

This guy thinks like Rudy; that a constitutional right (free speach) is a local issue, just like the 2nd amendment is a local issue.

Broward county is a lost cause. Its the most corrupt county both morally and financially is the state .In addition, its inhabited by the most unfriendly and nasty group of foreigners and Northern transplants in the country .
We live there for two years and left. It was a nice beach county 25 years ago but the New York / Boston / New Jersey transplants ruined it.

And part of its strong signal is its low spot on the AM dial. At 610 kz it will carry a lot farther than those at the other end of the band.

Dear Commissioner Ritter,

I was amazed this morning to read that someone in America would suggest that the government only do business with radio station’s that agree with them politically. (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/broward/sfl-churricane13jun13,0,4183214.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines)

This is the sort of mindset that existed behind the Iron Curtain in the old days, when people had to sneak to listen to Radio Free Europe at the risk of punishment.

In America, we thrive on free speech and open debate. To shun the most appropriate choice for a public emergency service simply because some of their syndicated content expresses a different, perhaps even—yegads-—a minority point of view is chilling and sad.

I urge you to rethink your position. Thanks.

Sincerely,

If Rush was on at the time of a news conference, then Rush would not be broadcast; the Emergency Operations news conference would.

I thought about that. I guess Stacy Ritter's concern is that conservatives would be more likely to survive a hurricane with the latest EO news. NPR listener corpses would be hanging from the palm trees.

Stacy Ritter is the Ray Nagin of the Fort Lauderdale area.
Her petty political bullshit may get some schlub and his family washed out of their home or worse, next Huricane of significance.
A radio station more in tune with her political drumbeat?
How about Radio Mugabe, or Radio Granma. Pravda -on line?
This twit is the best we have ; a Chinese meleamine clone of Debbie-Wasserman-Schultz-Clintoon, and THAT ain’t nuthin’ to be proud of. An’ you KNOW what I’m talkin’ bout.
