WASHINGTON (AP) - A fragile bipartisan compromise that would legalize millions of unlawful immigrants suffered a setback Thursday when it failed a test vote in the Senate, leaving its prospects uncertain. Still, the measurea top priority for President Bush that's under attack from the right and leftwon a brief reprieve when Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would give it more time before yanking the bill and moving on to other matters.
His decision set the stage for yet another procedural vote later Thursday that will measure lawmakers' appetite for a so-called "grand bargain" between liberals and conservatives on immigration.
If that fails, Reid threatened, "The bill's over with."

Good tagline!
Latin for, "Rot in Hell"?
Thanks for posting this update...
>> And if any of these maggots get to stay here, I demand that they be required to learn English pronto!!!!
Uh... don’t you mean “right away”?? :-)
The problem is the fact that we still need them to do something, otherwise the border is still broken and we're still stuck with an increasing burden of illegals.
My wife went through the same legal process to first get a green card and then citizenship 3 years later. I dont remember it coming close to $3000. Probably more around $800 for all the applications, fingerprinting, and doctor exam. We did it all ourselves, but I imagine if a lawyer were used, it would be about $3000 total.
Even if this pile of steaming crap dies...I’ll never forgive any republican or democrap who signed on.
If big business wants a dirt cheap work force so bad that it sells out American sovereignty...it can go to hell!
Bush is racing to get ahead of Carter as the worst president in U.S. history.
Manana
American. Same as me.
I don't want to see a "second class citizen who does the sh-t work".
And I don't want to see in every person with a brown skin a "criminal who broke into my country and won't leave".
Why would Bush put that mark on every person with the wrong skin color?
If people are here illegally, they should go home. Making these lawbreakers legal doesn't solve the problem, it renames it. No one will be fooled for long.
Besides, what's the hurry? If there's a need for new laws ( and that's debatable) it's worth doing right.
Slavery-lite, second class citizens and the kind of elitism that's gotten Europe in so much trouble isn't our way. Why am I not surprised that Lott doesn't "get" this?
If 60 senators, in essence, voted to kill this, they must be getting a real ear full from their constituents and all the stories about Americans supporting this are total fabrications.
It dies when the fence is built, the BP is staffed and run competently, the legal immigration system is flushed out, and Jorge Arbusto is retired.
It is crappy that we have to stop these Pro-Amnesty idiots and still put up with the same open border crap....but all it takes is one successful terror attack and the BORDER SECURITY will be done, even if we do it ourselves!
These idiot Reps will be gone if that were to happen!
That is exactly the type of thing I mean.
These pandering, traitorus politicians are only in 'service' for themselves. Statesmanship is a thing of the past.
Maybe we need to push for an amendment that says NO ONE can serve more than two terms in any elected postition.
They must've used The Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.
We had 9-11 and several foiled subsequent attacks and we still haven't learned. I'm not convinced another attack will teach us anything either, it may take several new attacks to make it sink in.
I have been trying for 2 days to speak to Warner’s office... always busy. Appears either they are swamped with calls or they have taken the phone off the hook... (no news is good news, right John?)
Use the pro-amnesty 800 line - 800-417-7666 - You should get through. You have to listen to their screed, but then you are automatically connected to your senior and junior Senators. Let us know if it works.
For many people it's a better deal to come here as a tourist, jump your visa and work a few years. Americans tend not to turn in visa jumpers.
The Senate voted 51-46 to reject a proposal by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, to bar criminals - including those ordered by judges to be deported - from gaining legal status.

Where are the Bush bots today?
In hiding?
