Published Thursday | June 7, 2007 Jon Bruning officially enters Senate race BY ROBYNN TYSVER WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

It's official: Jon Bruning entered the 2008 Senate race today.

Jon Bruning announcing his run for the Senate in the rotunda of the State Capitol. The second-term Nebraska attorney general said he will run for Senate whether fellow Republican and incumbent Sen. Chuck Hagel runs or not.

"I am a candidate without reservations," Bruning said at a news conference in Lincoln today. "I'm running hard and I'm running to win."

Hagel, who has angered many rank-and-file party members with his criticism of the Iraq war, has not announced whether he will run for a third term. He plans to make his decision in the fall.

Bruning said he is disappointed in Hagel's vote for early troop withdrawal from Iraq and Hagel's support of President Bush's immigration bill.

Bruning said he believes he can beat Hagel and former Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns if either get into the race. He tried to paint Hagel as an out-of-touch Washington lawmaker who is not a Nebraskan.

He referred to Hagel - who currently lives in Virginia - as a carpetbagger. Bruning said that if former Sen. Bob Kerrey got into the race he would also portray him as a carpetbagger.

Bruning noted that his supporters include former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne, Omaha businessman David Sokol and state Treasurer Shane Osborn.

Bruning made his announcement with family and about 75 supporters in the rotunda of the State Capitol.

Bruning is a brave man. He’s going to have the full force of the Bush administration aimed against him until he loses the primary.

I have not paid attention to any polls, but I believe that almost anyone would have a chance against Hagel (and I imagine that Bruning’s pollsters have told him the same). A real question would be if the former NE Governor, Johanns, got in the race...this would be a challenge for Bruning.

While age 38 is a little young to be running for U.S. Senate, it may give him the energy and enthusiasm to do what needs to be done in retiring Hagel.

We don't need a Quisling representing a solid American state.

“Bruning is a brave man. He’s going to have the full force of the Bush administration aimed against him until he loses the primary.”

The BushBots are not feared or powerful as they used to be.

The Grassroots will control the primaries, this time around.

Not the Rockefeller wing.

I’m just saying, that the Bush administration will be out there doing everything in their power to make sure Hagel wins the nomination. That’s nothing to scoff at.

38 too young ? If we can get 30-year old Conservatives to run for the Senate, we should do it.

Carpetbagger ... funny how poisonous that word still is, nearly a century and a half after the fact, and in regions that didn't even experience them.

>> Can he win? If so, I’ll have to send him money. <<

He holds statewide office and can win if conservatives all across the nation come together and donate time and money to help him out, but looking at FR, I'm guessing he won't win because many "conservatives" would rather use that time and money in other states to go after people who agree with them 90% of the time.
