Illegals bill hits Senate roadblock
Wa Times ^ | 6/6/07 | Dinan

The immigration deal foundered yesterday, on the verge of collapse under its own weight just days after it appeared to have a clear path to pass the Senate.

By late in the afternoon, Republicans were accusing Democrats of trying to "stuff" them, and Democrats said Republicans were trying to kill the bill by obstructing the process. Both sides were saying they don't know whether the process can be put back on track.

A showdown is scheduled for tomorrow, when Democrats said they will force a vote to set a time limit on the bill, and Republicans have promised to block that move through a filibuster. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that if Republicans block his effort to limit debate, it would bump the bill off the schedule and likely derail it for the rest of the year.

"People are looking for excuses on the Republican side to kill this bill," he said.

The Nevada Democrat said Republicans are trying to bog down the bill by piling up dozens of amendments -- most of them from senators who "have no intention of voting for this bill, no matter what we do with it."

But Republicans said Democrats are blitzing them by blocking Republicans from even offering amendments.

I think the Dems really want the Republicans to kill it. They want to blame it on them too though:’)

TURN THE ENEMIES WEAPON AGAINST HIM

Call the “Senate Immigration Reform Hotline” at 1 800 417 7666
Press 1 for your senior senator, 2 for your junior senator.

This will connect you DIRECTLY to your senator without going through the congressional switchboard.

JAM THE LINES. LET THEM HEAR OUR ANGER AND FURY.

Republicans have promised to block that move through a filibuster.

O mercy! Not one of those Daschle-Frist faux filibusters.

Red Herring. Who gets branded with it? GOP or Dems.

Let me preface by saying I do NOT support the current bill. But who gets branded by it is a real concern.

If/when this bill gets dumped, you can be assured the Dems are going to shout from the rooftops that "the American people wanted immigration fixed but the Republicans, caving into pressures from big business and right-wing zealots and racists, opted to do nothing." Count on it, it's going to happen.

The only way I can think of to counter this is to have a border security only bill to offer up immediately following the current bill's demise. This way it puts the ball right back into the Dem's court: the American people want the borders secured...are you Dems for it or against it?

They should just send this bill into outerspace never to been heard of or seen again. Then they need to deport illegals in this country; instead of spending money on those stupid hearings that prove and say nothing except another way to divert our hard earned tax money into their pockets and those of their families and friends. They also need to build the fence. They need to make good on their promises. If they don’t they can expect to get off the gravy train of life.

Personally, I don’t really care if they think we are idiots or stupid or whatever. The American Spirit is alive and well. It may take a little while; but we will win back our country.

We don’t need another bill. We need to build the fence and enforce the laws we already have. I’ll vote for that. I’ll be branded with that.

And neither side crediting the people who rose up with one voice against this disaster of a bill.

But who gets branded by it is a real concern.

If the bill founders, it's only because of the pressure these guys have received to kill it. The overwhelming majority of Americans -- in *both* parties -- are opposed to this rotten bill. If the Republicans are seen as killing it, that will be *good* for the GOP.

...caving into pressures from big business...

Nobody will believe this. Everyone knows it is pressure from big business that almost got this monstrosity passed in the first place.
