MARIA ELENA SALINAS
Showing the ugly side of a nation
June 4, 2007
The young ladies were handpicked from among the most beautiful women in the world, but it was not a pretty sight. Miss USA, Rachel Smith, slipped and fell during a crucial moment in the Miss Universe pageant on May 28.
The formal gown competition is not just about how you look in the gown, but about how you carry yourself in it. Smith stepped on her dress and fell on her rear end. She picked herself right up and, unfazed, struck a pose with a wide smile. An admirable reaction.
It was an accident that could have happened to anyone, at any place. But it happened to Miss USA in Mexico. And what occurred afterward has turned into an international dispute.
Although it is not uncommon to have an American beauty among the finalists, some people felt that Smith's fall should have disqualified her from the final top five contestants. Either the judges overlooked the incident and considered her poise and beauty above all else, or as some cynics have suggested they felt sympathy for her.
Whatever led her to the final phase of the pageant, there is no excuse for the reaction of the crowd when it was her turn to answer a question from the judges. As soon as her name was called, there were boos and more boos, then people began chanting, Mexico, Mexico, Mexico. They booed and chanted so loudly that Smith had to plead for their attention in both English and Spanish.
The question is: Why did they do it? Did they think she did not deserve the honor of being among the finalists because of her fall? If that were the case, they should have booed the judges for their decision, not Smith. Was it because they would have liked to see their own Rosa María Ojeda Cuen among the top five? They didn't boo the other four finalists who were also chosen above their Mexican beauty.
Suggestions have been made by Donald Trump and others that there were political undertones to the chants by the mostly Mexican audience sitting inside Mexico City's EstÁdio Nacional. They imply that the audience was lashing out at the U.S. representative because of the political tensions between the United States and Mexico on the immigration issue. Her presence reminded them of the absurd border wall that is being built, said one Mexican analyst.
It was a show of rejection to U.S. foreign policy, said another.
If in fact there was a political motive behind the booing of Miss USA, Mexicans should condemn the actions of the group of spectators who would do such a despicable thing to a young lady who was representing her country as proudly and honorably as all involved in the pageant. Fortunately, Mexico is still a free country, and anyone who disagrees with the policies of his or her neighbor to the north can take his or her protests and complaints to the U.S. Embassy.
It is very difficult to know what was going through the minds of the spectators at the Miss Universe pageant on that Monday night. It is possible that all of the reasons mentioned influenced their actions, or that the spontaneous response of a disgruntled few provoked a chain reaction. Whatever the reason, it sent a message of disrespect and intolerance by Mexicans in front of a television audience of around 600 million people in 180 countries.
No doubt the incident left a larger bruise on Smith than did the unflattering fall. Then again, all the hoopla about the booing of the fallen beauty has put a damper on what should have been a celebration for Riyo Mori. That's right in case you missed it among all the sensationalist headlines, Miss Universe 2007 is a young dancer from Japan who hopes that people will remember the moment she was crowned more than the moment when Miss USA was booed.
I wouldn't be surprised if these anti-American trogladytes in Mexico began chanting "Osama, Osama" if they were allowed to persist.
I am sick and tired of being told that Mexico is our "good neighbor to the South." Mexico is behaving more and more like an enemy state.
The Mexican government had better remember the first words of the U.S. Marine Corps hymn...
"From the halls of Montezuma..."
America invaded Mexico before, and we can do it again if Mexico wants to contiually antagonize and subvert our American sovereignty and way of life.
Someone said that the Mexicans were ticked because our USA woman took the job instead of one of their own....
As bad as this is/was, Mexico has shown its “ugly side” for years with one-party rule, corrupt officials, using every means possible to export their unfortunate workers/poor, ignoring history’s proof of what works and what doesn’t. This country lives in the shadow of the greatest country on the earth, and they seem to have learned nothing of the principles that made this country great. And they seem to prefer the life of a criminal society where their chief export is there own people.
As a result of this there is at least one legal Mexican who has been fired from his long standing job and he has no idea why.
> The question is: Why did they do it?
Boorish bad manners and impolite behavior from knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers: obviously their mothers didn’t raise them properly. Clearly there were no Gentlemen in the audience.
“Fortunately, Mexico is still a free country, and anyone who disagrees with the policies of his or her neighbor to the north can take his or her protests and complaints” and shove them where the sun don’t shine!
Kind of like the North/South Korea border.
Mexico is the most racist country on the planet, it’s as bad as Apartheid-era South Africa, the way the rich, white, elites treat the majority indigenous population.
They are covering their read end.
This was not about the fall or her making it into the finals.
This was the indigenous hate and jealousy Mexicans have for Americans .
I did some work down there a few years ago, the young women were advised to dress modestly because Mexicans think American women are whores.
The are jealous and hateful and we enable them to come and live here on our dime.
Personally I am sick of them
My worry is the Jihadist and Wahhabist ideology of Saud.
They are making to many entrees there for my liking.
Communists just go into death spirals and self implode usually only taking themselves out.
Jihad usually acts as a giant black hole where everything around it is sucked in as well.
Here’s the thing....I wrote a big blog post on this.
First, Miss USA WAS booed and she was booed BEFORE she fell down. Heard it with my own lying ears.
Then she fell down.
Wow, I thought I was seeing things but okay, she recovered quickly and I admire how she recovered so quickly.
It was AFTER this fall that the booing got really bad and by this time there were two things going on...first, they’d already been booing Miss USA because they are, if I may summarize, assholes. It was obvious from the start that these Mexicans or whoever was in that audience booing, I assume it was Mexicans, wanted to take back that their anger at never being able to create a vibrant democracy despite living in a country filled with a wealth of tourism and oil. They get angry when us foolish Americans complain of their silent invasion of our country.
Here’s the problem....Miss USA DID FALL DOWN.
Come on ladies and gems, this contest requires pitiful little besides looking pretty and walking around. Miss USA failed the walking around test!
I mean, how poised can you be when falling on your butt?
Sure I felt sorry for the woman and I don’t discount that someone could have put butter or something slippery on her shoe, it was obvious there was animosity in that audience.
But to put the woman in the top five after falling on her butt? I would think that this would be an automatic disqualification in a contest where the requirements are that you walk around and remain on your feet. Keeping her in the top five only served to further alienate the audience, not that I care about those heathens.
Anyway, that’s what happened....those Mexicans acted terrible and it wasn’t helped by Miss USA falling down while remaining in the top five.
What say you?
I'm not so sure Mexico has anything other than an ugly side.
She was actually booed the whole week leading up to the final event on Monday. My theory is the judges felt bad for the poor girl, being jeered all week long then falling down in the finales, they kind of gave her a pass on the fall. Plus she handled herself very well all week long considering how certain people in the audience acted so stupid towards her.
> Miss USA Rachel Smith...an American beauty.
A pretty girl to be sure... but Crikey! That is a truly frightening number of teeth she is showing, all at once! The only other girl I know who can do that is my German Shepherd.
It’s a shame she got booed, but if she’s like most Americans she won’t let that rude obnoxious behavior get her all bitter-and-twisted. She’s made of sterner stuff.
I can only assume it was the Mexican women booing her, because no red-blooded male with normally-functioning hormones could ever boo somebody like her: there would be something sexually ambiguous about any guy who did!
