However, now I do not feel alone. Peggy Noonan has a new column up in the Wall Street Journal Opinion Journal. She has clearly said what has been getting me down. I think I knew what was up, but couldn't put a finger on it. I knew it centered around the immigration debate, and the way our congressional leaders are behaving. That sentiment especially includes Mr. Bush too, but when I read this column, I felt like Charlie Brown yelling at Lucy at her Psychology booth when he yells, "That's it!" when trying to identify why he can't get into the Christmas spirit.
Try this clip on for size :
The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.
For almost three years, arguably longer, conservative Bush supporters have felt like sufferers of battered wife syndrome. You don't like endless gushing spending, the kind that assumes a high and unstoppable affluence will always exist, and the tax receipts will always flow in? Too bad! You don't like expanding governmental authority and power? Too bad. You think the war was wrong or is wrong? Too bad.
But on immigration it has changed from "Too bad" to "You're bad."
The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic--they "don't want to do what's right for America." His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has said,

Sure you can. I am a small business owner and I have to pay into unemployment just like any other "employee." I just work for myself. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Small family farmers in Virginia are out of business because they can’t compete with illegal labor! This costs them their livelihood and their homes. You need to read this book: http://www.kingsolver.com/home/index.asp
What does some romantic "live off the land" story have to do with illegal immigrants? And how does illegal labor affect the ability of these people to make it on a small farm? Illegal labor does not compete with them. Big corporate farms are not labor intensive operations
I don't have a problem with most of the responses you cited in the suveys, including this amusing result:
Micro-business owners said they favor the following proposals relating to immigration which have been suggested by Congress and the Administration:
Fifty-eight percent - Construct a wall at our borders to stop illegal crossings.
Eighty-eight percent - Construct a wall at our borders to stop illegal crossings.
BIG BUMP!
You need to stop being obsessed with me because I noticed that you posted a conversation between you and me on you FR home page.
I know that I am the best looking guy on FR ;) but you do not have to show that obsession in public :)
There definately is a charming element about you, JV, that’s why I can’t understand why you’re so insulting to your fellow Americans and freepers, who you say comprise and built the ‘greatest nation on earth’.
You got that part right.
I told you every time I see you state as fact some absurd opinion to prop up bad policy, I was going to call you on it. So our ‘relationship’ is up to you.
We’re not a nation of immigrants. If 15%^ are immigrants, then just what are the rest of us? We’re a nation of mongrels, brown ones, black ones, white ones, red and yellow ones. In fact you can’t tell what race most of us are anymore. That’s the way we LIKE IT. We are tired of being marginalized by our corrupt leaders. And we take a lot of flak from some who don’t think we’re quite pure bred enough for them.
That doesn’t excuse giving amnesty to illegals, including gang members.
Michael Gerson, former Bush speech writer, labels folks like me “National Chauvanists”. You betch! And proud of it! I will not stand aside for the “proud to be” parade of nations without shouting that I am proud to be an American! If that is chauvanistic, then so be it, because
I am proud to be an American!
“Duncan Hunter is the only honest conservative in this race.”
Really? You sure that “honest” was the word you wanted? I like Duncan, but he doesn’t have a chance. He might be a good VP though...to Fred Thompson.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon of France has a great quote. They are in the process of deporting thousand of aliens. It’s pretty bad when the French have out smarted us. (opps...is that racist?)
“”Generosity is not opening wide the borders without thought for how people will integrate, how they will live, how they will subsist,” Fillon said.

Okay, we got your hint that you don't think Hunter is 'honest'. Then you say you like him. Please, we're tired of dishonest politicians, maybe you aren't. So, tell us what 'dishonesty' is it we should know about Hunter?
It must have been a slow day over at Daily Kos for folks to show up here. Percentage of truth in your post: 0
The Left would love it if the Republican Party disappeared because as Karl Marx said, “The meaning of peace is the absence of opposition to socialism.” The Left can only resort to name calling, suppression of ideas, and childish temper tantrums when faced with competition, and failure of their own agenda. You state that President Bush probably heard the phrase “strategic plan” in a college class. Probably so. But at least he was paying attention, unlike John Kerry as is demonstrated in their grades.
Daily Kos is calling you. Bye bye!
I won’t cease my support for the party, but work harder to steer it. If someone, including the President were to call me unpatriotic, then so be it, for I know the truth and that is far from being the case. It would mean that he had made an unfortunate statement with which I strongly disagree, but it is one issue. I don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Wish I had heard Laura Ingram, although I have no time for Linda Chavez. Why on earth would she give air time to someone who was elected in a fraudulent manner? She got votes from illegals. And like most Dems she got a pass.
“Fred has been busy on TV....”
Are you involved in politics even though you have a job? You don’t think there is life off the set?
“Fred’s the man everybody wants and I’m just slightly suspicious of him because he won’t talk about things like the NAU and “free-trade” with China.”
Won’t talk or hasn’t talked?
I didn’t realize that they were attacking the prayer threads! This is ridiculous! Everyone has disagreements with their friends, for goodness sake, but they don’t end the friendship!
..I think you might mean Loretta Sanchez, but I know what you are saying...
Are you thinking of the congresswoman from California? Chavez wasn't elected to anything I know of. she was picked by Bush for Secty of...labor(?) but had illegal aliens living in her house. She's a republican.
..you and I do not see eye to eye on GWB, but concerning OhioWfan and Onyx—nice ladies without a doubt...
Ohio Wfan and Onyx left for what reason? There is stuff that I disagree with on FR, but so what. You don’t stop praying or participating because bad things happen. Pretty silly.
I have recently heard what I take to be the reason behind Thompson's recent surge in the polls and press. Thompson is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
This CFR is the main moving force behind the politics in our country. They are in favor of what they call "free-trade" because they would like to create a world government by starting with regional economic Unions like the European Union.(Which Gorbachev has called Soviet Europe) They have been working toward this end for decades. Their plan is to create the North American Union. My problem with Thompson is that he is pro-NAFTA. That's why he will most likely be nominated. He will continue their agenda. And while he is greatly preferable to Mrs. Clinton he is not what he appears to be.
Just like George W Bush, he will parade as a populist conservative and continue the CFR agenda.
Duncan Hunter is not running a good campaign but then it's hard to run a good campaign when your friends are not actually in power.
