UWO researcher finds what may be oldest fossil on Earth
Tue, May 29, 2007
By JOHN MINER, SUN MEDIA
A team led by a University of Western Ontario scientist has discovered direct evidence there was life on Earth 3.35 billion years ago
UWO geologist Neil Banerjee and his team found fossilized tunnels of microbes in ancient rock from Australia.
The find was dated by scientists at the University of Alberta using a newly developed laser-dating method.
This is very strong evidence, Banerjee said.
The discovery pushes the fossil evidence of life back to the early period of the Earths development. Scientist believe the earth is 4.5 billion years old.
With the discovery of the early fossil remains, scientists may be able to pinpoint where to look for life on Mars, said Banerjee.

This can't be. The earth is only 6,000 years old.

Meanwhile, the oldest living fossil had no comment.

Well, it is taking me more than two weeks to move less than mile, so I guess it is possible...

Their facts are wrong. Fossils are known from Warrawoona, Australia dating from 3.5 billion and there are carbon isotopes from rocks in Isua, Greenland dating at 3.8 billion that are thought by some to indicate the presence of bacterial life.

This can't be. The earth is only 6,000 years old. I used to work with a fundamentalist that believed that. The one time I asked him about the fossil record he stated that it was all made that way to test our faith. All of science dismissed in an instant, with no rebuttal evidence whatsoever.

I would love to learn more about that laser-dating method! But the article doesn't say any more.
