The immigration reform debate may be shaking up the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has inched past Arizona Senator John McCain for second place in the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone poll. Just two weeks ago, Romney was in fourth place among GOP hopefuls.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) remains on top with 25% support. That’s essentially unchanged from last week. In fact, Giuliani has been at 25% or 26% in the polls for four straight weeks.
This week, Giuliani is followed by Romney at 16%, McCain at 15%, and former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson at 12%. While Romney’s one-point edge over McCain is statistically insignificant, it’s worth noting that McCain had a six-point advantage over Romney just two weeks ago.

One asset Romney brings to the table is his articulateness. If he uses it to help deflect the AlGore type hype, great, but if he follows McCain’s route and just parrots the media convention wisdom, it would be a big setback.

My conclusion is that he is threading the needle on this issue in the right way, defending the conservative position without letting the leftists accuse him of being ‘anti-environment’.

Well, what’s *YOUR* proposal for how conservative Republicans should address the Global Warming issue? without coming off as ‘anti-environment’, which will cause them to lose the election.

And btw you lose a lot of credibility with that talk when we both know the “most likely to advance liberalism” candidate is Rudy G. I know you dont like Mitt, but you are going to have to keep your attacks to a more believable level of hysteria.
It's about time someone does it. Energy independence is a national security issue. It doesn't have to be about Global Warming at all. In fact, it is irrelevant. A smart conservative will embrace the energy independence issue and handle it in the right way.
Mitt is on the right side of this issue as well.

Get real. Read the contents of what he actually implemented. It's clearly a radical enviro document...one that puts the lie to Romney's cover story.

Romney is a text book example of the success you can achieve in our great free enterprise system. He is a very successful businessman, has raised a great family and is now pursuing public office not just to make money and a lust for power like the Clintons did. I don’t see anything socialist in the principles of his life. You can certainly make the argument that he is not conservative enough on some issues but he can hardly be labeled a socialist. Guliani and McCain are much bigger violators of conservative principles in both public and personal life.
Specifically his health care plan is hardly socialist unless you consider mandatory car insurance to be socialist as well
You have not offered any substantiation of your claims other than repeating that Romney’s plan is the same as Hillary Care. Hardly the display of intellect befitting a FR level conservative discussion.

If you choose to respond with another “Romney is a socialist” line then with respect to my own intellect I will have to bow out of the discussion because we can’t make headway with pure cliched statements with no logic or facts to back them up.
His personal life means nothing to me. What matters is public policy. And when it comes to public policy, it is hard to imagine a more liberal record than the one possessed by Mitt Romney.
By the way, when it comes to Mitt Romney’s socialized medicine scheme, you and he find yourselves in complete agreement with Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and James Carville. They love MittCare, and have praised it to high heaven.

Personal life is very often a very good indicator of what a person will do in office. As I said Mitt Romney may not pass the smell test on every conservative issue but the records of Guliani and McCain are way more liberal.
Guliani: Pro-abortion, gun-control, pro-gay marriage and a messed up personal life
McCain: McCain-Fiengold Campaign Reform and the disastrous shamnesty bill.
I would even say Bush has been a huge disappointment with the immigration bill and out of control spending.
Romney is by no means the perfect candidate but of the current crop until Fred Thompson makes it official, Romney is our best candidate that is electable nationally.
Wrong. He’s not electable at all. His nomination would fracture the Republican coalition.
I, for one, will NEVER cast a vote for him, and I will urge as many voters as possible to do the same.
