DEMOCRATS TO CHANGE 185 YEAR-OLD HOUSE RULE TO ALLOW TAX HIKES WITHOUT HAVING TO VOTE
National Review Online ^ | 5/16/07 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 05/17/2007 8:22:13 AM PDT by libertarianPA

In a stunning move, House Democrats today revealed they will attempt to rewrite House rules that have gone unchanged since 1822 in order to make it possible to increase taxes and government spending without having to vote and be held accountable. House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today vowed Republicans will use every available means to fight this unprecedented change.

“This is an astonishing attempt by the majority leadership to duck accountability for tax-and-spend policies the American people do not want,” Boehner said. “The majority leadership is gutting House rules that have been in place for 185 years so they can raise taxes and increase government spending without a vote. House Republicans will use every tool available to fight this abuse of power.”

Last November, House Democratic leaders promised the most open, ethical Congress in history:

“[W]e promised the American people that we would have the most honest and most open government and we will.” (Nancy Pelosi press stakeout, December 6, 2006)

“We intend to have a Rules Committee ... that gives opposition voices and alternative proposals the ability to be heard and considered on the floor of the House.” (Steny Hoyer in CongressDaily PM, December 5, 2006)

The rules House Democrats are seeking to change have not been changed since 1822.

Republicans have already achieved significant legislative successes on the House floor with 11 consecutive “motion-to-recommit” victories that exposed flaws and substantively improved weaknesses in underlying Democrat bills. But rather than living by the same rules which have guided the House of Representatives for 185 years, Democrats are proposing to change the rules in order to game the system and raise taxes and increase spending without a House vote. What are House Democrats afraid of?

Bush won’t block it. It’s working in cahoots with the RATS these days!

OK, that’s it.

No taxation without representation - the very reason their jobs exist at all.

It’s time for a revolution.

It sure does...remember what happened the last time the people started shouting that phrase?

I'm no right-wing nut, but the writing is on the wall, a serious confrontation between the psudo-elites and the common people is brewing.

I remember what happened, and I think that's exactly what's going to have to happen to let that bunch of traitors in DC know that WE THE PEOPLE aren't going to take it any more!

It is an internal House rule. It cannot be vetoed by the President. There is no filibuster in the House, either.

I haven’t seen anything along the lines of ‘open borders’ from him, so I can’t respond to that.

I found his position at "http://www.ontheissues.org/OH/John_Boehner.htm"

Straight open-borders ticket. Got 0% from FAIR.

Why Dane, I’m flattered—and humbled—that you believe my cronies and I determined the election! (blushing)

Well you should be blushing, blushing in shame, for your help with putting queen nancy in power.

OK.
I’ll take that under advisement, Danester, and pass it on to my fellow conservatives/cronies: my barber, Benny, and my co-worker Bill. And Mrs. tumblindice.
From our hubris—from the heights of determining the election—we are prepared to stand abased, abashed, ashamed and mortified for costing Republicans the Congress.

Securing the Border & Enforcing Our Immigration Laws
Key Republican Border Security Accomplishments This Year

Secure Fence Act (Signed into Law) – Legislation authorizes construction of 700 miles of reinforced fencing along the southwest border.

FY 2007 Homeland Security Appropriations Conference Report (Signed into Law) – Legislation funds critical measures designed to strengthen America’s border security, providing $21.3 billion for border protection and immigration enforcement. It also provides:
$2.77 billion for border patrol, adding 1,500 new Border Patrol agents, for a total of 14,800;

$1.2 billion for border fencing, vehicle barriers, technology and infrastructure; and

$4.2 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Border Tunnel Prevention Act (Signed Into Law) – Legislation makes it a crime to knowingly construct, finance, or allow the construction of an unauthorized tunnel across a U.S. international border. Individuals caught using such a tunnel to smuggle aliens, contraband, drugs, weapons, or terrorists face penalties of more than 20 years in jail.
In July and August, congressional committees held a series of 21 hearings hearings in 13 states on border security. These hearings strengthened our ability to craft strong border security legislation like the Secure Fence Act.

Earlier this year, House Republicans announced a set of five principles to be reflected in immigration reform legislation. Republicans want to enact a strong bill that secures our borders and puts a premium on strict enforcement of our immigration laws. The goal is to send a bill to President Bush that reflects these principles:

Republicans strongly support initiatives to secure our borders and provide additional resources to federal and state authorities to strengthen border patrol efforts.

Republicans strongly support strengthening enforcement and stiffening penalties for illegal immigrants who break our immigration laws.

Republicans support enforcing the law on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants and holding them accountable.

Republicans oppose efforts to reward the behavior of illegal immigrants who have made the choice to break our laws.

Republicans believe the success of our country depends on newcomers obeying the law, assimilating into American society by learning English, and embracing our common identity as Americans.
Above all else, the American people expect us to secure our borders and make sure we effectively enforce of our immigration laws, and that’s exactly what Republicans are pushing for.

The above is from Boehner’s website. Note the date, compared to the link you gave me. I think he realized what a huge issues this is with the GOP base, and is now acting accordingly.

That’s not quite fair...

The Prescription Drug Plan was the HUGE hammer that Democrats were going to beat Republicans with in the election. Do you not remember the weeks and weeks of press conferences and Democrat news conferences on this?

Bush co-opted it, made it his own, and made it much SMALLER than what Democrats had planned for. HE BEAT THEM AT THIER OWN GAME, and they utterly hate him because of it...

When the Republicrat party again gets it’s collective ass handed to it on a platter because it turned away from it’s conservative base, I’ll GLADLY take the blame.

In fact I’ll take it now. I hope the liberal SOB’s get their asses stomped in 2008.

We have ONE liberal party, we don’t need another one.

If this is allowed to stand, I ASSURE you that an Iraq pullout will be the next thing done by “Not Voting”..

The key to this is passing legislation, without members having to be called out BY NAME on it...

“let the democrats destroy themselves with this extreme stupidity.”

I would agree, but the American people will NEVER find out about it.

If REID had sent out a press release like this, Every Major news source would be breaking in with special reports, but since it’s DEMOCRATS, have you seen a SINGLE source in major media, other than an editorial column in the Washington Times?

Remember, we are fighting a National Media being run by a gay, leftist Mafia, as much as we are the Socialist Great Leader, PElosi...

No--let these anti-Constitution, anti-American extremists keep doing what they are doing--the American people aren't stupid--they'll remember these shenanigans come election day.

Remember the old cliche "Give'em enough rope and they'll hang themselves"? Same thing.

It wasn’t quite fair of him to add another trillion dollars to the budget over the next few years either. It wasn’t fair of him for expanding government and increasing the sense of entitlement already bred into the American public.

How about standing up for what’s right? What about the principles that Ronald Reagan stood for?

Don’t make his pandering out to be something to be proud of. The man never saw a bill he didn’t like in six years. He’s as much of a conservative as Barney Frank is a ladies’ man.
