Traffic has become increasingly congested and tempers flare as slower drivers occupy what has been historically referred to as the “fast lane”. It’s time to get that Left Lane back! It is our considered opinion that not only will traffic move more smoothly and more quickly once the Left Lane is used in the way it has been designed but also headaches, frustration, bad tempers and road rage will all be greatly reduced when this pressure valve is released. I agree, in this day and in our culture, it is a very bad idea to provoke strangers deliberately on the road. A young man in Atlanta recently got stabbed to death after getting into a confrontation with someone who was tailgating him. The tailgater was completely in the wrong, but he is not the one who is now dead.
Sounds to me like the statement of a passive-aggressive coward. Do you walk up to people on the street and spit on them too? Maybe you don't have a right, but you have a reason, and that's to piss them off. No, of course you don't; they'd punch your face off. But you're a big man when you're in a metal box, huh? Good for you, hero.
Maybe one of these days the person behind you will be Richard Petty and you'll find youself upside-down in the ditch.

Cool Why didn’t they tell us that in Drivers Ed? What a great idea! We get to pick and choose which laws we want to obey. I’ve got to share this with my kids.

That's why I said morally, not legally.
Morally, there's no difference between a misdemeanor and a felony - or any other law broken intentionally, unless the law is, itself, immoral or unethical.
You've never sped---not once, not a day in your life? You've never done a rolling stop at a Stop sign---not once?
Pick up a volume from the codified laws of any municipality in this country, and I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that you can find at least one law you've broken, time and time again, because the law is ridiculous. So yes, in essence, you do get to pick and choose which laws you want to obey.

The best advise is never to do anything that would antagonize an LEO, especially if you’re not black or Hispanic. If they do stop you, be exceedingly polite and ignore any provocation or insulting remark on the LEO’s part. Like it or not, that’s the way it is.
I don’t really have what it takes to follow that advice. During the stop in question, I was so dumbfounded by the cop’s behavior that all I could do was stammer. If the situation were repeated I’m pretty sure I would tell the cop what I think of his “disrespect” and take my chances in court (whereas I plead “nolo” last time).
I didn’t say I’ve never sped. I’m just amused at the attitude that there is a right to exceed the speed limit and the cursing at those that get in the way. Laws are for the “little people”.
I’m a right lane driver. If I happen to be in the left lane passing a car, I will get over as soon as it is safe to do so. If there is more than one vehicle that I am passing, chill out and let me pass them. Don’t shoot me, flash your lights, honk your horn, flip me off or attempt to pass me on the right just because you had to slow down to adjust to traffic.
If I’m driving in the left lane with no one around and no left exit coming up, go ahead and shoot me. You have my permission.

My dad taught me to go the speed of the lane you are in. I use the left lane for passing only - one big reason is that I think a speeder (me) is more likely to “stick out” there. I always signal and take plenty of time in passing.
Just the other day I was in the left lane passing and up comes this little red Honda all tricked out on my tail. I moved into the center lane (a bit faster than usual so he wouldn’t scoot around me to my right) and he took off again weaving in and out of traffic - I imagine he was going 90 or so (posted 70).
My first thought was- where’s a cop when you need one. Then I wondered: if I came upon him crashed in the ditch down the road a ways if I would stop to help. And then, several miles down the road he WAS on the side of the road with the hood up looking at his engine! (I didn’t stop!!)
I don't think anyone on this thread would classify "the ability to exceed the speed limit" as a right. Rather, that speed limits are set so arbitrarily low, they're practically begging to be broken.
If I'm speeding and a cop pulls me over, c'est la guerre. You pay your money, you take your chances.
I never made this claim. As you have repeatedly ignored or chosen to overlook, I have admitted that I did not make the proper exception for the class of car you drive. In the general sense, fuel economy is directly proportional to the horsepower developed by the engine which is regulated almost entirely by wind drag. This is absolute. You are out to prove something that has not been stated, or you bask in ignorance and are really proud of it.
