A day in the life of President Bush (5/13/07): pics of Jamestown 400th Anniversary

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush spent most of the weekend in Washington. However, they did travel to Jamestown, Virigina, today to attend the ceremonies marking the 400th Anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown settlement. Here is the AP story as published on the FOX News website:

President Bush Celebrates Jamestown's 400th Anniversary
JAMESTOWN, Virginia, May 13, 2007

(AP) Fond of promoting the endurance of freedom, President George W. Bush on Sunday hailed America's humble beginnings as a reminder that new democracies require huge sacrifice.

"From our own history, we know the path to democracy is long and it's hard," Bush said in a ceremony honoring the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, America's first permanent English colony.

"There are many challenges, and there are setbacks along the way," Bush said. "Yet we can have confidence in the outcome because we've seen freedom's power to transform societies."

The President also did something that possibly may be a first for a U.S. president when he conducted the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Apparently, he did a pretty good job at it, too. So President Bush has a musical side. Who knew. :)

Bush playfully conducts orchestra in Va.
By SONJA BARISIC, Associated Press Writer
Sun May 13, 3:20 PM ET

JAMESTOWN, Va. - JoAnn Falletta was doing what a conductor should — concentrating on the orchestra in front of her. No wonder it took her a few seconds on Sunday to realize someone behind her was motioning for a try.

"Smiling at me kind of devilishly," Falletta said.

She gave him her baton and stepped aside.

Gesturing exuberantly, the president led the orchestra during part of its performance of "Stars and Stripes Forever."

"We didn't expect him to know the score so well," Falletta said afterward. "He was not shy about conducting at all. He conducted with a great deal of panache."

That was the music played for Bush's exit after his speech at a ceremony commemorating the founding 400 years ago of Jamestown, America's first permanent English settlement.

Just before the music ended, Bush turned to Falletta, who stood on a step below him, kissed the top of her head and left without saying a word.

The 400-strong orchestra was made up of about 50 members of the Virginia Symphony, plus musicians from youth orchestras around the country. The switch in conductors was impromptu, said Falletta, the symphony's music director.

"I think he may have just been seized by the desire to conduct the orchestra," she said.

Falletta did not spot Bush until alerted by a musician.

"I'm embarrassed now that I didn't notice him, but I was just thinking of the music," she said.

Bush stepped onto the podium and took over.

The musicians were impressed by how musical Bush was, Falletta said. "He was cueing the brass, he was cueing the percussion, he kept the tempo going," she said.

Bill Fearnside, a violinist with the Virginia Symphony, put down his instrument and picked up a camera to record the moment.

"It was a little shocking, but it was fun," Fearnside said.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

— Monday, the President has no public events scheduled. First Lady Laura Bush participates in a roundtable discussion on women and heart disease at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC

— Tuesday, the President meets with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt in the Oval Office. He also delivers remarks at the Annual Peace Officers’ Memorial Service in the Capitol.

— Wednesday, President Bus welcomes his friend, British Prime Minister Tony Blair to White House. (I believe this may be their last meeting in the White House before Mr. Blair retires from office.)

— Thursday, GWB meets with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the Oval Office. Later, the two leaders will participate in a joint media availability in the Rose Garden.

— Friday, the first couple will be at their Prairie Chappel Ranch in Crawford, Texas.

EXTENDED SCHEDULE:

— May 20-21, 2007: President Bush hosts NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at his ranch in Crawford, TX.

— May 23, 2007: President Bush delivers the commencement address to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT.

Ah, yes! It’s good to see pictures of him smiling. He hasn’t had very much to smile about lately, has he.

We’re going to miss him! One of the most intelligent and influential VPs we’ve ever had!

Thanks for the message about the replay of the Jamestown celebration at 2am.

I had checked cspan, and did not find the posting. So I just went back to the “earlier today” section to see if they had posted the live event. They had.

Then I went back to tonight’s schedule and discovered that if we do math looking for ‘unposted minutes’ this is what we find:

12:30 AM EDT
1:25 (est.) Video Magazine
Road to the White House
C-SPAN

02:41 AM EDT
1:52 (est.)
House Committee
Wounded and Returning Veterans
Veterans Affairs
Robert Filner , D-CA
R. James Nicholson , Department of Veterans Affairs

12:30 + 1:25 = 1:55 [end of posted program]

1:55 + 45 {the time noted at the noon live broadcast] = 2:40 which just happens to be the time posted for their next scheduled program.

No one at cspan will ever convince me that this is inadvertant or a coincidence. They deliberately refuse to post the President’s appearances whenever they can get away with it.

I am going to try to call in tomorrow morning during open phones to see if I can point out this bias on-air.

That is a FABULOUS photo, Nancy. They’re getting SO big .. SO fast!! Darn .. the time, it’s flying ... just yesterday, you posted the baby pictures. SO glad Jon called you .. I know it made your day. I just love that picture from the sandbox .. God bless him and all of you, and all our brave military and families.

LOVE the Dose, Wolfie .. those pics at Jamestown are awesome. To think of what the early Americans endured is staggering. What a wimpy, whiny society we’ve become in the main today. Thank you! Hope your babies took sweet care of you today .. ;)

On another note .. would appreciate your prayers. I’m doing something I’ve really been putting off for a long while: having a knee replacement .. sched. for June 5. I hate the thought of any surgery, darn scared of it .. but I’m bone on bone in both knees - no cartilege, and was suddenly told that my position would be ending Aug. 1. So while I’ve got insurance, I have to end at least half of my misery, which has just gotten worse by the day. I know it’ll be painful, but it’ll get so much worse if I don’t do it. Thank God .. no general anesthesia ... I’ll get an epidural. YAY!

It’s really restricting me so much, and maybe I’ll be able to be more mobile and active, which will maybe allow me to find another job when this is over. If all my prayers are answered, if I heal well, I could possibly get the other one done 6 weeks later, but that’s a close call.

Plans are for it to be the relatively new minimally invasive procedure, so no muscles should be cut, thereby eliminating the need to go to a rehab facility. I should be in hosp. for about 4 days, and come home. I’m hoping I’ll be able to continue working from home that next week, with the physical therapist coming here 3 times a week for a few weeks. I’ll be on a walker for about 10 days, then graduate to a cane for another week or so, God willing.

I truly HATE and fear the thought of surgery .. so I’m praying for calmness and peace about it, and good healing.

Had a spectacular Mother’s Day .. really the weekend. Last night, my #1 son had a huge milestone b-day bash at a great
restaurant and club for about 80. I was a bit sad, because son #2 is on a new job adventure, traveling for the whole summer for a telecom company, and I knew he’d be hating missing this memorable occasion for his bro. About an hour after I got there, as I was chatting with some friends .. I turned, and #2 was standing there with MD flowers!! He had told NO one .. and surprised us all.

I bawled like a baby ... but what a night, what a gift for all of us .. so much fun after that, and we met today for brunch before his flight to return to OK.

OWF and Dolly .. he leaves tomorrow for his next event somewhere in OH .. if I find out, I’ll let ya know. His appearance would be hard to miss .. they drive a lime green dually truck and pull a 40’ trailer with a lime green restored ‘58 Chevy truck on it .. their corp. logo icon... and set up their tents at county, state fairs, special events, etc.

Hope all the Dose Moms had a wonderful day. God bless us all, our dear President and family and our incredibly courageous military and their families..
