There's a vacuum in the GOP, we keep hearing, and Republicans aren't quite satisfied with their presidential choices.
Apparently, neither a veteran senator-war hero, nor a Harvard MBA/JD corporate governor, nor even a law-and-order, 9/11 mayor is quite good enough for the Red Staters. There's just something missing.
And what, one wonders, might that be? Exactly what je ne sais quoi would fill the alleged GOP void?
Just Fred.
Thompson that is. The actor who doesn't act, Thompson is tall and big; he talks straight, drives a truck and is wunna-us. A bootstrap American with take-it-or-leave-it charisma, he's got smarts and the kind of steely gaze you'd like to see aimed at al-Qaeda.
His resume otherwise has all the right bullet points: lawyer, chief minority counsel for the Senate Watergate Committee, a U.S. senator who ran hearings on campaign finance controversies while chair of the Senate Government Affairs Committee from 1997-2001.
Like Ronald Reagan's, Thompson's acting career has featured strong manly roles -- a CIA director, senator, FBI agent, chief of staff and rear admiral -- as well as head prosecutor on ``Law and Order.'' When Thompson spoke recently to the Orange County (Calif.) Lincoln Club's annual dinner, he approached the podium to the L&O soundtrack.
In his speech, he came across as sincere, honest and straightforward -- all the traits Americans crave in a candidate -- and he talked folksy:
``Even if we won't be going around in the woods trying to find any bears to kill, sometimes the bear visits whether you're looking for him or not,'' he said.
What's not to love about Thompson? Apparently, nothing, which may explain why the former Tennessee senator is polling in the...

Kathleen Parker is pretty liberal a lot of the time.
Wasn't Kerry polling under 5% at this time last election? There's a long way to go.
Tagline change : )
An oblique hint from Fred to invoke Reagan's terrific 'Bear in the Woods' ad!
I know, and deserves major kudos, also. My problem is I simply can't remember usernames very well.
I was on another thread earlier where I suggested to someone who wanted FDT info, that they check with SD Mom. That was the only name I could come up with on short notice. But, there's a number of you folks who are keeping the FDT threads alive. Maybe I'll start a MSWord file of usernames so I can recall them at will. You need recognition for all your work.
Are you sure Swifty O’Neill has endorsed anyone? He claims to be a Democrat and likes to keep his powder dry.
As for Thompson, with respect, I think he’d end up like Bob Dole, a kindly guy who is loved but does not have the umph to get over the finish line. John Glenn tied him knots in the hearing to see if China got too much missile technology from Clinton campaign contributors, etc.
HUH? What vacuum? Seems to me a whole spectrum is represented in the GOP. Can’t say the same about the Demodogs.
Hmm. That sounded like bragging. : / I meant that I never miss READING a Fred article this way.
It has been a slow couple days for Fred news, but I expect it to pick up later this week when he has another big gig.
Swift Boat Vet supports Duncan Hunter
One News Now
A Naval veteran who co-founded the group “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” says he will do whatever he can to help Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-California) become the next president of the United States.
John O’Neill, a co-founder and member of the group, says in 2008 he is campaigning for another Vietnam veteran who is running for the Oval Office — Representative Duncan Hunter.
“He is a Vietnam veteran who I can really be proud of,” says O’Neill. “I’m really happy to be able to be for someone instead of just being against someone. I’m going to do everything I can to try and help him out.” And so are many of the people in the Swift Boat Veterans group, he adds, clarifying that they are doing so as individuals and not on behalf of the group.
O’Neill says he recognizes that the California lawmaker is a long shot, but so were the Swift Boat vets when they organized to stop Kerry in 2004. “The long-shot causes are always the causes most worth fighting for,” he says. “That’s what I believe in — so I think he has a chance; and that’s who I’m for.”

....To the best; of my knowledge/memory...not many; if any, senators even came to the hearings....the hearings died....and many of our national security secrets sold to the ChiCom by the 'toons for campaign $$$$$....and the LMSM just marvelled @ that.."Bubba was Sooo Slick."
Why don’t you put this on its own thread?
People don’t come to Thompson threads to read about DH.
I come to Thompson threads to convert folks to DH fans.
Be that as it may, I was asked if I was sure O’Neill endorsed Hunter. I provided the proof.
Jeez. It’s not that I can’t get behind one the nominees already running. I just think Fred fits the bill completely for me. I’d back him and I’d donate. The others, ehh, I’ll vote for one of them, but sorry no cash from me.
From listening to rats, I can say that they’re not happy with their vacuum choices either.
Let’s not go overboard and conclude that we’re the only group wandering in the wilderness.
Not all possible candidates have entered the fray yet. Ralph Nadar, I believe, is sitting on the sidelines waiting for signals to enter. Every FReeper can send Ralph a buck or two, right?
Where Fred is like Reagan is that he has very fleshed out views and positions that he has written, spoken and given radio addresses about.
Like Reagan it sounds like he doesn’t need to consult ANYBODY about how he feels on any subject, his voice is melodic and soothing like Reagan’s too.
He actually seems to care about his positions intellectually and isn’t looking for a winning formula of positions to win the nomination.
From listening to rats, I can say that theyre not happy with their vacuum choices either.
____
The best vacuum out there dollar for dollar is the Bissell Healthy Home vacuum, model 5770. For about 250 bucks it does everything that vacuums that cost 10 times as much do just as well, and they’re an all american company.
Nope. Dyson sucks the best!! :)
Dyson’s are a LOT of money though, go Bissell!
>People don’t come to Thompson threads to read about DH.<
Well, plenty of Fred-heads come on DH threads to diss DH , mom. It’s all part of the game, doncha know?
Worth EVERY penny.
