Royal warns..or is this a threat?
"It is my responsibility today to warn people of the risk of his candidacy concerning the violence and brutality that would be unleashed in the country," she said, suggesting that unrest was especially likely in the volatile suburbs that were the site of rioting in 2005.

I'm surprised that Segolene Royal hasn't surrendered yet. It's not in character.

This is gonna show how ignorant I am of French politics...
but
Which one is which?
is it true that one is a ultra right anti-semitic and the other is an avowed socialist?
If that is true, why is either a cause for celebration?

This couldn't be a bad thing...however, what those folks in France call conservative compared what truly a conservative is like here in the states...is probably like the difference in black and white.
We'll see how pro American he is...I think that's the key here.

The French courts will likely overturn these results due to the conspiracy by Diebold and “Bushco”.

Thanks, Cincinna, for your continuing coverage of this election. I am sufficiently confident in the outcome to have ended my years-long boycott of French wine with a *pop* -- the uncorking of a bottle of Perrier Jouët Brut which I purchased yesterday, "just in case." Mmmm, goooood.
It has been pointed out that the polls have not yet closed. But, of course, the French do things differently -- and it is my understanding that the numbers we are now seeing are not merely "exit polls," but actual vote counts, the counting getting underway before the polls close. It seems the results are closely aligned with the last polls, which gave Sarko a 55-45 lead.
Sarko isn't just "socialist-lite" like the nominally "Conservative" Chirac, but has actually called for a rolling back of the French welfare-stateism, a firm stand against terrorism, and (gasp) a friendly relationship with the U.S. Maybe I'll be disappointed. It seems many FReepers are so jaundiced as to dismiss the election as a non-event. We'll see. I am optimistic.
