MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - A woman denied a teaching degree on the eve of graduation because of a MySpace photo has sued the university.
Millersville University instead granted Stacy Snyder a degree in English last year after learning of her Web-published picture, which bore the caption Drunken Pirate.
I dreamed about being a teacher for a long time, said Snyder, 27, who now works as a nanny. Story continues below ↓advertisement
The photo, taken at a 2005 Halloween party, shows Snyder wearing a pirate hat while drinking from a plastic Mr. Goodbar cup. It was posted on her own MySpace site.
Although Snyder apologized, she learned the day before graduation that she would not be awarded an education degree or teaching certificate.
Jane S. Bray, dean of the School of Education, accused Snyder of promoting underage drinking, the suit states.

Just a good thing she didn’t have a cigarette in that picture. The SWAT team may have come down on her as well.
That having been said, there is a LARGE segment of the current college-aged population that needs to pull their heads out of their asses. Online pictures can follow you forever. In my freshman class, at least three "young ladies" have either posted nekkid pictures of themselves, or a bf has done it for them. Eventually, someone that matters will find them.
It looks like an open and shut case to me. The college probably thinks they can revoke degrees already granted too.
They deserve everything they are going to get.
I just can’t figure out how to download them...sorry.
Well, in that case, throw the book at her!
Or make her walk the plank.
I see nothing wrong with that.
Funny, I had teachers wo had bulletin baords with pictures of themselves doing curious things, such as one guy who fancied himself Jimmy Buffett’s twin and sailing around like he was “Son of a Son of a Sailor”... Dang Pirates again!
Some teachers are extroverts and simultaneously like drink. It can combine to become common knowledge, and this woman’s case, that may be the situation. And she wasn’t even a teacher yet! No students to sway.
Sorry, but she’s getting the shaft here.
Me, too. I would be scared to death to put anything personal up on a website.

I think keel hauling is coming back in vogue...
Perhaps the real Dean was murdered by an escaped lunatic, who assumed her identity.
This university is a day late and a dollar short.
A degree is a product, ESPECIALLY an education degree. The univsity is under the impression that somehow they do not live in the commercial environment. She paid for that degree, she past the grades, she is entitled to the benefit of her bargain.
I think these nutcase professors and administrators are just upset they don’t get invited to the cool parties.
My sister went to a teacher college. I read her textbooks. Let’s just say that her coursework was pretty much useless. It was actually worse than useless, since a lot of the teaching is erroneous, and graduates leave school believing that they’re ‘enlightened masters.’
Has anyone ever explained that picture?
I think Millersville is WAY out of bounds by denying her her teaching degree. The DUI thing is a tougher question. I think that hiring a teacher with a recorded DUI conviction is up to the individual school district & it should not be the business of a state teachers’ college to be making this stand. But I can see the other side of the argument.
I had a math teacher in the 8th grade that was involved in an accident, ran her car into a yard and hit a tree. She was drunk at the time.
The next day we all chuckled when she walked into the classroom.
She yelled, ‘what are you laughing at?’ and that was the end of it.
Everything was business as usual thereafter.
BTW, I didn’t see the title of the pic, that does change things.
Not likely that anybody remembers the movie. Millersville is less than 30 minutes from Hershey (PA). Everybody’s first reaction is “Chocolate”.
If not for her user name, there’d be little to suggest that she was drinking (Beer)?
Why did she apologize? It was a freakin Halloween party! She should be raging against these Stalinists!
