The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq has been killed, Iraq's Interior Ministry says. Abbu Ayyub al Masri was killed in an "internal battle", the ministry said. More follows .

The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq has been killed, Iraq's Interior Ministry has said.
Abbu Ayyub al Masri was killed in an "internal battle", according to the ministry.
However, there is no independent confirmation of the report.
Brigadier-General Abdul Kareem Khalaf told the Reuters news agency: "We have definite intelligence reports that al Masri was killed today."
Another source in the ministry also said al Masri had been killed, Reuters said.
The US military has not confirmed the reports - but it has a $5m bounty on the terror chief's head.
There has been increasing friction between Sunni Islamist al Qaeda and other Sunni Arab insurgent groups in Iraq.
Local groups are said to be angered over al Qaeda's indiscriminate killing of Iraqi civilians.
Al Masri, an Egyptian, assumed the leadership of al Qaeda in Iraq after Jordanian militant Abu Musab al Zarqawi was killed in a US air strike in June 2006.
The US military has described al Masri, also known as Abu Hamza al Muhajir, as a close al Zarqawi associate.
Sometimes the Iraqis are a bit premature with this stuff. I’ll wait on the Coalition confirmation. It would be great news to have their second leader wondering where the virgins are, though.
It is nice to see that they are turning on each other.

Sorry, militants now are saying he is safe. The Iraquis want to believe he is dead. They are sort of like liberal Dems, they wish, dream things go their way. As usual, the bad guy has made it safely. Sort of like how Phila. fans see their teams. You know they will break your heart. So any good news in Iraq will be, ‘it will break our hearts.’ Now if it is true, the MSM will blame Bush for not getting him sooner!

I have a friend who just returned from twelve months in Anbar province working the counter Improvised Explosive Device (IED) problem. It was his fourth tour of duty in Iraq.
His assessment is that:
1. We are very close to providing the stability required for the Iraqis to be successful
2. The flow of terrorists from external countries has been significantly interdicted and that the terrorists are far fewer in number than people realize
3. The media is 3 to 6 months behind on the real stroy in Iraq
4. The media is fully invested in our defeat in Iraq

Actually you're wrong. The Democrats will claim that since this was an internal kill that we don't need to be there any longer. Watch them spin this into "Bush's policy is a failure."

Hopefully this story is not true. Hopefully it is cover for the “real” story: al Masri at an undisclosed CIA rendition location learning to surf the waterboard and ratting out all his mates. Thereafter, off to Gitmo for a reunion.
