THE United States' leading hurricane forecaster says global ocean currents, not human-produced carbon dioxide, are responsible for global warming.
William Gray, a Colorado State University researcher, also said the Earth may begin to cool on its own in five to 10 years.
Speaking to a group of Republican MPs, Dr Gray had harsh words for researchers and politicians who said man-made greenhouse gases were responsible for global warming.
"They are blaming it all on humans, which is crazy," he said.
"We're not the cause of it."
Dr Gray said in the past 40 years the number of serious hurricanes making landfall on the US Atlantic coast had declined even though carbon dioxide levels had risen.
He said increasing levels of carbon dioxide would not produce more, or stronger, hurricanes.
Dr Gray, 77, has long criticised the theory that heat-trapping gases generated by human activity are causing the world to warm.
Earlier this month, he dubbed former US vice-president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore "a gross alarmist" for making the Oscar-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, which helped focus media attention on global warming.
Yesterday, Dr Gray said that politics and research into global warming had created "almost an industry" that had frightened the public and overwhelmed dissenting voices.
He said research arguing that humans were causing global warming was "mush" based on unreliable computer models that could not possibly take into account the hundreds of factors that influenced the weather.
He said little-understood ocean currents were behind a decades-long warming cycle, and disputed assertions that greenhouse gases could raise global temperatures as much as some scientists predicted.
"There's no way that doubling CO2 is going to cause that amount of warming," he said.

Ummm, and how does this expert explain the warming of Mars?
He did not rule out that our ocean currents were not in fact warming Mars and other planets. /scarasm off
I think the sun warms the water and the water is warming the plent, just like on Mars except is has no water.
I’m sure he’s being ostracized by the scientific establishment and will never be allowed to appear on the Weather Channel.
And I thought it was caused by Algore’s hot air.
Heretic! How could anyone doubt the dogma of St. Algore and the Church of Global Warming. /sarcasm
It’s those darn whales. All swimming in the same direction.
Silly expert...Doesn’t he know that the debate is over, and there is no question that humans are causing global warming? I know this because 90% of Hollywood stars and a bunch of unnamed U.N. scientists told me so.
Oh no.
Does this mean that boob thing with the no staring law is off the table?? ;)
A lot of the GW critics seem to be some combination of older scientists and tenured academics. Probably because they aren’t trolling for grant money, or kowtowing to “warmist” university faculty for fear of being bumped off the tenure track.
This expert happens to be THE preeminent mind in the meteorological community when it comes to hurricanes. and, imperfections aside, he KNOWS ocean currents and such. If he says ocean currents are a factor in a warming Earth, bank on the fact that they, indeed, are. In your haste to bash GW, do NOT overlook the fact that Dr. Gray is NOT, in fact, voicing support for it being caused by humans; that he is on the same side of this debate as you are.
Do make an effort NOT to cause a “friendly fire” incident, here.
Obviously, if you askd Dr. Gray about the mechanisms influencing warming on Mars, he’s not going to blame currents in the freakin’ Pacific.
We're DOOOOMED!
The Earth has been warming since the end of the last ice age. Next issue
It’s best if you leave Mr. Sun out of the equation.
You may have already known this but the Weather Channel is the waste basket for people who are unable to draw an audience in competitive markets. That's why your local weather guy seems to always do it better.
Low pay and long hours don't exactly draw the cream of the crop and the Weather Channel is well-known for both.
Dr. Gray is an expert in this field as it applies to Earth. Experts on Mars say that windstorms have blown a layer of light colored dust off large areas of Mars’ surface exposing darker rock underneath, which absorb more sunlight.
This together with increased sun activity is thought to explain Mars’ warming.
Google: Mars, windstorms, albedo, 2007.
You’ll get no argument from me on that score, nor from Dr. Gray, which was my whole point.
A butterfly flapped its wings, causing an anteater to be startled, which stampeded a herd of elephants, whose low-frequency vibrations alarmed all the whales, which changed ocean currents, which warmed the climate, which caused everyone to buy big SUVs with air conditioners. There. Solved.
Duh.
