Toddler dies after pit bull attack

From Live5 News

Authorities say a toddler was mauled to death when the family pit bull got loose from inside a laundry room and attacked the young boy.

Brian Palmer died Tuesday morning from his injuries. He would have turned two-years-old in August.

The 2-year-old dog was euthanized, and its head was sent to Columbia for testing.

Authorities say the dog had killed a family cat and fought with another dog within the last month. There were --no-- adults in the house when the attack occurred and the oldest of four children at the home was 16-years-old.

I have a friend who rescues border collies. It cracks me up when a group of us will be standing up chatting together at her house and we suddenly realizer we are in this little tight group. Her dog does to us what herding dogs do, he nudges and leans on us until we are really close together. Funny thing is we don’t even tend to notice it until we’re tight as sardines, but then we have a good laugh.

Emotion trumps logic, always.

I'll give you a good example of that. A person who has a strong affection for pit bulls claiming that pit bulls aren't any more dangerous than any other breed despite all the evidence to the contrary. By denying the obvious, they have allowed their emotion to trump logic.

That link you posted includes also includes a tabulation of all deaths and maimings inflicted by breed since 1982.

Pit bulls and mixes, 1200
Rottweilers and mixes, 430
All other breeds combined, 580

Speaks for itself.

Your display of ‘logic’ is faulty for a couple of reasons, the primary one being you don’t provide a total number of the dogs for comparision, you don’t account for the human element thats behind the ‘attacks’ documented.

By not allowing for the total number, and the human error inherent, your ‘logic’ is fundementally flawed.

Ask your vet.

Misuse of a dog is no different than misuse of a gun, or a automobile, or anything else thats potentially dangerous/deadly.

Those tools have nothing to do with dogs, dogs are autonomous. A car or gun is never going to hurt a stranger on its own, they just sit there inanimately. Doing harm requires conscious, intentional action by a person. The closest tool comparison to make to a vicous animal would be a landmine.

“If it was your kid gunned down at Virginia Tech...”

“If it was your dad dying of lung cancer...”

“If it was your family washed out in a home in Bangladesh because of global warming...”

HEY! I can play this liberal fascist game too!

I wonder what happened to all those kids hundreds of years ago who grew up with pits. Ohj, that’s right. They survived.

I don’t own a dog and I do not have one in this fight. But what I do have a dog in is freedom for one and all.It is not up to you or the government to dictate what kind of dogs I and anyone else do and do not own.

I had a friend in Atlanta who had a wonderful black lab. Whenever I went over to her house I would play ball with him and when we finished playing and went inside he would go immediately to the pantry, sit down, look at me and bark for a treat.
After I moved I didn’t get back to Atlanta for about 2 years, but when I did Rupert met me with a ball and after I threw it a few times he went straight to the pantry. He had not forgetten our old routine.

Those parents did not kill their child.

They may be negligent and certainly responsible, but they are not murderers.

100% false.

How does a dog become ‘mean’? Less than 5% of all dogs have a mental disorder. Discounting that, you are left with dogs born and raised. And just like kids, if they are abused they become ‘abusive’. Except a dog doesn’t understand things like ‘rule of law’ nor the concept of imprisonment. And except in general terms, they don’t get ‘right or wrong’ at all, concerning concepts we produced from our brains which are unique on this planet.

The only animal on this planet that kills for the reasons many wrongly attribute to any of the ‘scary dogs’ are HUMAN.

Likewise, the only way you get a ‘vicious dog’ is via abuse of the dog by the owner/handler.

Ask your vet.

They’re great dogs. I have a border collie mix, she doesn’t try to herd people but she will try to herd up deer in my yard or a park. Never succeeded yet, but she still tries.

I have no attachment to pit bulls. I don’t even own dogs. But I have a strong attachment to capitalism and freedom. A ban on pits is the antithesis of that. If we enact bans every times something like this happens, there will be at least five breeds that are prohibited from ownership, including many dogs people now own and love.

I remember a time when people were afraid of the killer sheperds and rottweillers. History repeats itself.

‘Its Seven O’clock!’ is the cry our two dogs await each evening, cause thats ‘doggie bone time!’.

I’m a better man because of my dogs. And you can tell alot about anyone by watching them with their dogs.

Thank you for making my point. Fallujah is now a thriving city. Even the “new Fallujah”, Ramadi, is on the up and up.

But all people remember is the Blackwater murders and the Marine assault. Like the “civil war” that doesn’t exist and the parade of car bombs. No one ever sees or hears about Iraqis standing up to terrorists and living normal, everyday lives.

Same as Fallujah, the 100s of years of pit breeding and previous hysteria against other breed of dogs are conveniently forgotten.

The same way a dog becomes a digger or a barker or a sighthound, they're bred for it. Pit bulls are bred for aggression. That can usually be suppressed by a responsible owner, but it will always be what they revert to when training fails.

I don't need to ask my vet anything, she's a medical professional not a criminologist.
