(April 26, 2007)--A man whose criminal record dated back to a bicycle theft at age nine was put to death Thursday evening in Huntsville.
Ryan Dickson, 30, was sentenced to die for the murder of 61-year-old Amarillo grocery clerk Carmelo Surace in 1994.
Also killed the attempted beer theft was Surace's 60-year-old wife, Marie.
Dickson was the 13th Texas inmate put to death this year in the nation's busiest capital punishment state.
Dickson's lawyer, Ronald Spriggs, launched "a last-minute effort" court effort to block the execution, but the appeals failed.
He contended Dickson might have been mentally retarded and ineligible for execution and that evidence of childhood abuse should mitigate his punishment

Ryan Dickson won’t be killing anyone else now, will he?
Some people just never learn. This is why we need the DP.
If Cho hadn't turned his gun on himself and had been arrested instead, I'm sure his defense lawyer would've tried the same thing.
And so he should.
This is Texas. Don't come around acting a fool.
Works for me.
GOOD RIDDENCE
13th ?? Its almost MAY and they could do ONLY 13 ? They are not busy. Lackadaisical is more like it! I remember back in the late 90s when Bush was gov, the death chamber in Huntsville used to run at near full capacity with Tuesdays and Thursdays being execution nights.
The murderer that killed my Meme and Aunt was put to death in Texas November of 2003. He was on death row for 10 years having committed his crime in 2003.
It makes me wonder how this guy got 3 extra years at the taxpayers expense.
I don't know about you, but I kinda thought the sign was self explanatory, it doesn't really leave a lot of room for guessing.
I think he’s where he deserves to be...
Correction: 2003 should be 1993.
Were you a witness to the execution ?
Damn Right.
My neighbors son is there too...
Crime in 2001 and still not on the schedule.
I am sure the BI-Polar defense is at work there too.
No. My mother and my cousin (my aunts daughter) were.
I decided against it because I knew that it would stay with me having suffered anxiety from the actual murders. I’m glad I didn’t because our advocate did witness the execution and she told me that he had a death rattle. That means they talk when the drugs are administered and they make really horrible noises. The inmate is instructed to not talk at a certain time to not upset his witnesses. Our advocates description was enough for me.
It does not make any sense. I always said...I will give him the 10 years if I can have 10 more years with my loved ones.
Texas Execution Ping!
