Other tech sites will bore you with in-depth "technical details" and performance specs in their product analysis. At BBspot we pull back from the boring benchmarks to compare the superficialities, and we do it all on a single page.
For years many have predicted the death of Windows at the hands of Linux. The latest challenge to Windows comes from Ubuntu. Since everyone has long made up their minds in which operating system to use, we compare these two operating systems on the features that don't matter. Read on to find out if your favorite wins...
Ubuntu - It's an African word that means "Humanity for others." Embraces the spirit of the open source movement, but it's a bit corny.
Vista - It's what you would see looking through your Windows (or outside if you weren't wasting time on your computer). Clever.
Advantage - Vista
Ubuntu.com - Lands you at the home page for the Ubuntu distribution. Choosing a name like Ubuntu means the domain will be available.
Vista.com - Takes you to the page for a company that provides "online services for businesses." That's what you get for choosing a common word as product name.
Advantage - Ubuntu
Ubuntu - 50%
Vista - 66%
Advantage - Ubuntu
The best two out of three wins...
Vista has every driver you will ever need - 1,110,000 results
Ubuntu has every driver you will ever need - 554,000 results
For driver support Vista is the clear winner.
Winner: Vista
Vista banged your sister - 66,100
Ubuntu banged your sister - 63,200
Close, but...
Winner: Ubuntu
I'm in your Vista killing your processes - 958,000
I'm in your Ubuntu killing your processes - 254,000
Ubuntu triumphs in security.
Winner: Ubuntu
Advantage: Ubuntu
If the only two flavors left at Ben and Jerry's were Ubuntu or Vista, which would you eat?
Ubuntu - With that name, the brown chunks might be zebra droppings. Might not be the best choice.
Vista - It's green and minty fresh. If you can get over the grass clippings, you'll enjoy it.
Advantage: Vista
Which operating system needed a completely made up category to give it a victory, so the competition appeared fairer?
Advantage: Vista
The virtual coin flipper was used at random.org. I chose the Swiss Franc 1 to maintain neutrality.
Ubuntu - Heads
Vista - Tails
Results: H-T-T-H-T-H-T-H-H-T-H
Advantage: Ubuntu
Ubuntu beats Vista by a score of 4-3. It looks like Microsoft's perch at the top might be coming to an end. Ubuntu wins our Technical Award of Excellence.
Linux beats Microsoft for most streamlined applications it seems.
or the other way around.
Gates has been locking down 80% market shares with third rate software and fascist marketing long enough. Ubuntu is a workable solution to that problem for people who are ready to move on.
Yeah—it’s a good thing that they weren’t coparing Ubuntu to XP, then, huh? :)
I'm considering setting up a Linux box and running Parallels to open a WinXP Virtual Machine to run some applications. I figure I'll have fewer crashes, more security, and the ability to run a wide variety of SW. But I don't know anyone who's tried to do this.
It seems like it would be more convenient (and more flexible) than a dual-boot setup.
No matter which distro I use I’ve never been able to get Ubuntu to work on my machine, sigh.
I just use the free VMware Server product.
I couldn't get 6.10 to install on my old, old machine and I'm a fairly savvy Linux guy. I ended up installing 6.06 (which installed fine) and then doing an in-place upgrade to 6.10.
Now that I've used it for a little bit, I have to say that it takes some getting used to. No root login, sudo for everything, is very different from the other distros I've worked with.
See my post 13, it may work for you. My 6.10 install kept hanging at 73% complete.
I don't particularly relish the idea of doing two installs, especially since I once lost everything simply by re-installing Litestep after not using it for awhile, which I've used on nearly every machine I've ever owned.
I think I just need to replace this thing anyway.
Another cherished childhood memory ruined by a guy in a too-tight suit.
How much ram does it have?
You might have missed the box labeled “Check here if you need the alternate desktop cd suited for computers with less than 256MB of RAM” when you went to download Ubuntu.
The guy on the right looks vaguely familiar. I think I know him.
