Linux beats Microsoft for most streamlined applications it seems.

XP SP2 has a superior vowel to consonant ratio.

Gates has been locking down 80% market shares with third rate software and fascist marketing long enough. Ubuntu is a workable solution to that problem for people who are ready to move on.

Yeah—it’s a good thing that they weren’t coparing Ubuntu to XP, then, huh? :)

Does anyone have experience with Parallels Workstation? It's supposed to allow easy creation of Virtual Machines within a system and can be used (with OS software, of course) to run multiple OS's on one system.
I'm considering setting up a Linux box and running Parallels to open a WinXP Virtual Machine to run some applications. I figure I'll have fewer crashes, more security, and the ability to run a wide variety of SW. But I don't know anyone who's tried to do this.
It seems like it would be more convenient (and more flexible) than a dual-boot setup.

No matter which distro I use I’ve never been able to get Ubuntu to work on my machine, sigh.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu on my old laptop to make it viable again. It installs to a certain point and then freezes. Then when I reboot, it says "OS not detected"
Any ideas anyone?
Mandriva perhaps?

No matter which distro I use Ive never been able to get Ubuntu to work on my machine, sigh.I couldn't get 6.10 to install on my old, old machine and I'm a fairly savvy Linux guy. I ended up installing 6.06 (which installed fine) and then doing an in-place upgrade to 6.10.
Now that I've used it for a little bit, I have to say that it takes some getting used to. No root login, sudo for everything, is very different from the other distros I've worked with.

Reminds me of a cartoon I once saw. Two dapper Yuppie dads are sitting in the Little League bleachers, with a disheveled, unshaven bum between them. The first Yup says, "My son has an IQ of 160!" The second Yup replies, "My son has an IQ of 180!" The bum looks at both of them and says, "My son has a batting average of .450!" At which the two Yup dads hang their heads and mope.

See my post 13, it may work for you. My 6.10 install kept hanging at 73% complete.

When you say "old, old machine," how old are we talking about? Mine is five yrs, and it was 6.10 that wouldn't install.
I don't particularly relish the idea of doing two installs, especially since I once lost everything simply by re-installing Litestep after not using it for awhile, which I've used on nearly every machine I've ever owned.
I think I just need to replace this thing anyway.

How much ram does it have?
You might have missed the box labeled “Check here if you need the alternate desktop cd suited for computers with less than 256MB of RAM” when you went to download Ubuntu.
