Lee was a traitor, who resigned from his teaching position at West Point to fight for the Confederacy. I see him the same as the deluded Americans that have gone to fight for the Taliban.
Lee should have been hung, and his army decimated, in the Roman sense of the term.
This would have been a colossally stupid decision if the goal was to end the fighting. Fortunately, folks who understood this were calling the shots.
“Lee was a traitor, who resigned from his teaching position at West Point to fight for the Confederacy.”
You really should learn about a person, and his life, before making such statements.
This sentence is completely and totally False.
Lee resigned his commission in the United States Army. His last post was in Texas before the Civil War. He had left West Point YEARS before.
If you want to attack the man, at least use facts, in short.
Different United States then. Lee thought that he was in fact fighting for his country, Virginia. In his mind, he would have been a traitor if he had stayed with the U.S. Army and fought against his “homeland”. You’re applying a presentist analysis here onto an individual (Lee) and a country (the U.S.) that had fundamentally different worldviews in the 1860s.
“Lee was a traitor who resigned from his teaching position at West Point... He should have been hung and his Army decimated in the Roman sense of the term”.
In the first place you don’t know what you are talking about. Lee was stationed in West Texas at the beginning of Secession. He took a leave of absence to take care of business affairs at the Arlington Plantation and was home and available for service when the John Brown incident came up. He then was offered the Command of the Union Army which he declined and resigned his Commission.
Only when Virginia seceded did he join the military forces of his Native State. He was not a “traitor”.
And btw, since you would have liked to have had my GGrandfather murdered, I would like to invite you down to Texas and try it on me as he’s not here to defend himself.
Don’t like the man much, do you?
Lee was not teaching at West Point when he choose to remain loyal to his home state. Lee was an officer in the United States Army and generally regarded as the best officer in the military. His abilities had recently been put on display when he quickly stopped the John Brown rebellion.
Lee should have been hung”
You could at least argue that he should have been hanged....
I'd ask "what are you, 12?". But when I was 12, I was much better informed than you were.
Neither Robert E. Lee, nor the other Confederate officers were tried for treason. In a nation of laws that matters.
“Lee was a traitor, who resigned from his teaching position at West Point to fight for the Confederacy. I see him the same as the deluded Americans that have gone to fight for the Taliban.
Lee should have been hung, and his army decimated, in the Roman sense of the term.”
As the old saying goes, IGNORANCE IS BLISS and yours must be truly delightful. Go find a pre 1950 history book and READ it.
Lee was a traitor, who resigned from his teaching position at West Point to fight for the Confederacy. I see him the same as the deluded Americans that have gone to fight for the Taliban.Like I said .... Oh, and G-Bear, Lee was superintendent (not at teacher) at West Point from 1852-55. At the time the War came, he was on leave from the 2nd U.S. Cavalry.
Lee should have been hung, and his army decimated, in the Roman sense of the term.
“Lee should have been hung, and his army decimated, in the Roman sense of the term.”
Kind of overkill, as there wasn’t much left of his army at the end. Lots were killed or wounded. The Union was fighting a war of attrition, and wouldn’t exchange prisoners, with the legitimate excuse that the Confederates were not taking black soldiers from southern unions prisoner, so huge numbers in POW camps. Also, most of the remaining army deserted towards the end of the war, as thing got hopeless, and they wanted to tend to their families and farms that had in many cases been ravaged by the Union Army.
Lee was a traitor, who resigned from his teaching position at West Point to fight for the Confederacy. I see him the same as the deluded Americans that have gone to fight for the Taliban. Lee should have been hung, and his army decimated, in the Roman sense of the term.
It has been quite some time since the thought of "knownothing loathsome Yankee" has been caused to cross my mind. Thank you G-Bear for exhibiting the charm those people are known for and for restoring the description to prominence.
“Lee should have been hung, and his army decimated, in the Roman sense of the term.”
Lee was ten times the man you ever be, pipsqueak.
At least take consolation that Sherman decimated enough innocents to make up for it.
I say this as a son of Maine who tried to convince his wife to name our son after Joshua Chamberlain: You should read Lincoln's second inaugural address over and over agin until you stop having idiotic thoughts like this one you've posted.
Wrong. You should be hung for IGNORANCE.
Nah, it’s not even worth it.
