Car bomb kills 9 U.S. soldiers in Iraq [20 more wounded]

BAGHDAD - Nine U.S. soldiers were killed and 20 were wounded Monday in a suicide car bombing against a patrol base northeast of Baghdad, the military said.

An Iraqi civilian was also wounded in the attack on Task Force Lightning soldiers in Diyala province, a volatile area that has been the site of fierce fighting involving U.S. and Iraqi troops, Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.

Of the 20 wounded, 15 soldiers were treated and returned to duty while five others and the Iraqi were evacuated to a medical facility for further care, the military said.

Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.

It was the second bold attack against a U.S. base north of Baghdad in just over two months and was notable for its use of a suicide car bomber.

On Feb. 19, insurgents struck a U.S. combat post in Tarmiyah, about 30 miles north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and wounding 17 in what the military called a "coordinated attack."

It began with a suicide car bombing, then gunfire on soldiers pinned down in a former Iraqi police station, where fuel storage tanks were set ablaze by the blast.

Militants have mostly used hit-and-run ambushes, roadside bombs or mortars on U.S. troops and stayed away from direct assaults on fortified military compounds to avoid U.S. firepower.

There’s a difference in defeatism and wishing our President and generals on the ground would stop pussy-footing around and take care of these dead-enders.

"Hate to sound like I’m Monday morning quarterbacking but c’mon, it’s been four years. How can they even be getting CLOSE enough to do damage anymore?"

As the father of a Stryker platoon leader over in that very area right now.....I can bloody well tell you.

It's the IDIOTIC rules of engagement, folks. We have finely trained, tuned fighting men who are sent over there.....and not allowed to do what they are trained to do. Their jobs are to ride around til they are shot at or blown up.

If you think I'm exaggerating or engaging in hyperbole, think again.

It's utter and complete bullshit. I'm fed up. Either the DoD wakes up and lets these fine soldiers do what they've been TRAINED to do......or get them the hell out.

I didn't raise my son to be a f**king target, and I'm mad as hell.

Is this verified already or has AP and Yahoo been fairly accurate lately?

Yes. And yes. The story is also on Drudge now as well (different source too).

I'm feeling so disgusted with my countrymen. As a Freeper father (who lost a son in Iraq) posted earlier tonight: “There is honor about us, but we just can’t see it because of the bastards who surround us.”

Of course there is. Calling for victory and calling for immediate withdrawal are two completely different things.

I hear you. We have a grandson right in the middle of all this. Every time we hear or read a such a report, we hold our breath. The president needs to take command and protect our troops. I know there is no simple solution, but our military does not need to be targets.

That's the problem I have with this. Even in the beginning, instead of dropping leaflets and warning everyone to leave a town, they should have been able to go in and clean house.

” We can go back and bomb them back into the stone age if the need arises. “

Democrats will never let that happen, they will do everything they can
to red tape the rules of engagement.

President Bush is the Commander in Chief. In my opinion he does “act like it”. I have no evidence that he is “to to tie the troops hands” (I think you added one too many to’s in your post, just my opinion).

President Bush has repeatedly stated that the war is in the hands of his generals, as it should be, that is, in the hands of the guys who are trained and educated to fight wars.

Don’t understand your “doesn’t have the spine” reference to President Bush. Seems he will go along with whatever the military recommends.

Sounds like you agree with Senator Reid that “the war is lost” and wish to blame President Bush for everything.

As far as the Iraqi’s participation in adjusting to a democratic lifestyle, ah, to coin a phrase, “this ain’t no microwave popcorn”. Study some history chap and after you review how long it took to stabilize Germany and Japan, then come back at me. OK?

AP Yahoo and Drudge...Drudge might have gotten his info from the dem strategist on Hannity tonight. But ok...

Nothing from Centcom or DOD or even Sandrat?

If this is so. Peace to the family and my utmost thankfulness for their ultimate sacrifice.

"Guys, it’s time we handed the place back to the Iraqis."

That's a pathetic thing to say following an attack like this.

Aside from the obvious, this is in all probability not Iraqi, it's al-Queda. If we "hand it over to the Iraqi's" they'll erase every trace of freedom across the ME in 20 years, and be here in 30.

It's time to go Israelite on these 'effers...assasinate their theocratic/political leaders in their homes and vehicles with hellfire missiles, bulldoze the homes of the bombers' families, imprison their brothers and fathers, ramp it up to an unacceptable attrition level for the bastards...

Screw world opinion and our own liberal media...Bush is a lame-duck loser now anyway you slice it, what's he afraid of...he's going to be unpopular or something?
