BAGHDAD - Nine U.S. soldiers were killed and 20 were wounded Monday in a suicide car bombing against a patrol base northeast of Baghdad, the military said.An Iraqi civilian was also wounded in the attack on Task Force Lightning soldiers in Diyala province, a volatile area that has been the site of fierce fighting involving U.S. and Iraqi troops, Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.
Of the 20 wounded, 15 soldiers were treated and returned to duty while five others and the Iraqi were evacuated to a medical facility for further care, the military said.
Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.
It was the second bold attack against a U.S. base north of Baghdad in just over two months and was notable for its use of a suicide car bomber.
On Feb. 19, insurgents struck a U.S. combat post in Tarmiyah, about 30 miles north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and wounding 17 in what the military called a "coordinated attack."
It began with a suicide car bombing, then gunfire on soldiers pinned down in a former Iraqi police station, where fuel storage tanks were set ablaze by the blast.
Militants have mostly used hit-and-run ambushes, roadside bombs or mortars on U.S. troops and stayed away from direct assaults on fortified military compounds to avoid U.S. firepower.
And their little dingleberry, Syria. Can't believe that puke Pelosi was over there chatting with our soldiers' murderers and still holds a position.
We all knew they would take out one of these outposts..it was only a matter of time...they are trying to break our remaining will...this.... I am afraid will lead all the morning shows....then we will be treated to all the MSM hand wringing and how the surge has failed.
Good lord. When is this nonsense going to end? How much American blood must be spilled before the situation turns around? I’m starting to wonder if it is worth it. The reality is there is no choice but to stay the course at this point; but damn it hurts.
Is this verified already or has AP and Yahoo been fairly accurate lately?
good question
It’s amazing. The world has turned upside down.
I agree. Iran is behind the training, personnel, and explosives. It is time for them to meet Mr. Cruise Missile.
I say we pull back into the bases and wait it out. It’s time for Iraq to stand or fall.
Keep in mind, everyone... these threads are major targets of opportunity for anti-war trolls. Be wary of the defeatist rhetoric you’re about to see here.
Bin Laden said Americans won't have the stomach for a prolonged fight. Even freepers are proving him right now.
Oh please.
This may never turn around.
Now before I get flamed allow me to explain...our enemies know Bush is hamstrung by internal politics and can not react in the way we should....so our goal here it seems is to get it to an even keel.....and force it into the Iraqis lap...and stop coddling them and make them stand up.
I find it difficult to believe the first reports.
This isn’t “nonesense”. It is war. And we who wish to defeat tyrany and preserve western civilization understand that the sacrifice is mandatory.
“These brave Troops, made a sacrifice...”
Why do you say “sacrifice”?
Quite frankly, had I been sucker-punched out of this world and you came along and accused me of having “sacrificed” myself I’d be quite pissed off at you......to an equal degree as I would be if you called me “chump” under the same circumstance.
We won the war. That was our original objective. Now it has morphed into nation building and we don't have the resources to build an Islamic nation at this time. It is past time to stop holding the Iraqi's hands and let them fight and die for their sovereignty. We can go back and bomb them back into the stone age if the need arises. We've spilled enough American blood propping up Iraqis who are not willing to fight for their own country.
Ah, but the question is which Iraqis do you want to hand it back to? The democratically-elected government that is in charge now, or the thugs with the suicide bombers?
Problem?
