Car bomb kills 9 U.S. soldiers in Iraq [20 more wounded]

BAGHDAD - Nine U.S. soldiers were killed and 20 were wounded Monday in a suicide car bombing against a patrol base northeast of Baghdad, the military said.

An Iraqi civilian was also wounded in the attack on Task Force Lightning soldiers in Diyala province, a volatile area that has been the site of fierce fighting involving U.S. and Iraqi troops, Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.

Of the 20 wounded, 15 soldiers were treated and returned to duty while five others and the Iraqi were evacuated to a medical facility for further care, the military said.

Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.

It was the second bold attack against a U.S. base north of Baghdad in just over two months and was notable for its use of a suicide car bomber.

On Feb. 19, insurgents struck a U.S. combat post in Tarmiyah, about 30 miles north of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and wounding 17 in what the military called a "coordinated attack."

It began with a suicide car bombing, then gunfire on soldiers pinned down in a former Iraqi police station, where fuel storage tanks were set ablaze by the blast.

Militants have mostly used hit-and-run ambushes, roadside bombs or mortars on U.S. troops and stayed away from direct assaults on fortified military compounds to avoid U.S. firepower.

I still don’t know the fundamental answer as to the question of how you defeat an enemy who is willing to give his life and kill Iraqis along the way just at the chance kill an American.

When you load up a car with a couple of artillery shells and then wait for your enemy to drive by and then detonate... Its hard to imagine how you can effectively fight an enemy who does that.

You’re right, this country was raised from the sands and should be returned to the sands.

I hope you joking...

No joke, newbie. Iran needs to be taken out -- their military, their nuke sites, and their leadership. Long past time.

We wouldn’t have dared try to rebuild Germany until after all the enemies were destroyed. Al-Qaeda is not going to allow us to work around them.

History would reveal the Japanese just as committed to their wayward cause until the US unleashed a power larger than their comprehensive capabilities upon their's.

It may just take such to overcome extremism again.

Do we even have a large enough military to do that without overstretching even more? Draft?
Let’s take into the consideration how attacking Iran will play with the Shiites in Iraq...that would definitely get them riled up in the South...

...We've spilled enough American blood propping up Iraqis who are not willing to fight for their own country.

The Iraqis are willing to fight for their own country. That is why they are signing up to be in the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police (and getting bombed while they are crowding around to sign up, but still they join up).

That last post mentions how the IP are patrolling Ramadi after helping clean out the terrorists. The mainstream media only reports the bad news, and there is bad news, but if you look around you can get a more balanced view. Our military are professionals, they know what to do and how to do it, we have to give them time and support.

THESE BRAVE TROOPS ARE FIGHTING TERRORISTS SO THAT THEY DON'T KILL US HERE!!! NEVER FORGET THAT!!

About half the country has forgotten that, at least. Five years ago, the place we're in now was unthinkable.

I'll tell ya, that MSM moratorium on showing the 9/11 footage turned out to be a master stroke for the leftists.

If we used a WW II mind set, the war would have been over in 1 year. We would have been producing our first Saturns in the Bagdhad plant in 2007.
The NY Times would have been shut down by President Roosevelt. What a shame. These fine young people sent to do a mission that is impossible and with traitors at home stabbing them in the back.
I am sorry for the families of these Amercian heros. They went out to protect us and our families. Makes me cry and makes me angry.
C’mon Amrica! Wake the F++K up!

Taking out Iran in the manner I described above could be accomplished with just our Navy and Air Force — no ground troops (or draft) required. There’ll be no occupation/rebuilding/policing effort, just a quick and total destruction of their naval, air force, and nuke facilities. .....and it would be over well before our domestic enemies could scream “quagmire.” So the answer to your question is yes, we can handle it.

Iran's the swamp behind the vast majority of violence in the ME - Hezb'Allah, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Fatah, Khobar Towers, Beiruit Marine Barracks - everything.

That swamp desperately needs to be drained, but do we have the balls to do it? a 90 day bombing campaign against Qom, Tehran, Nantaz and other nuke sites, command & control?

Only in my dreams.

God love these poor men and women.

My daughter and her husband got back from Iraq last Nov. I'm so thankful that they're back safe but I could cry when i think that these poor men and women could have been my girl.

And now the media want us to believe that Cho was just irate over a girlfriend.

This guy was a sleeper who plotted and planned and executed to the letter. God help us to be prepared for the unthinkable. The democrats would desire to lull us back to sleep and complacency.

"The Iraqis are willing to fight for their own country."

Good, now let's let them. Four years is more than enough time to hold their hands. We liberated them, now we have other battles to fight.
