Retired US Senator Fred Dalton Thompson Wins California Republican Assembly Straw Poll
Red County SB ^ | Adam Aleman

Posted on 04/23/2007 12:15:48 PM PDT by Smogger

BREAKING: Officials with the California Republican Assembly released the results of their presidential preference straw poll which occurred during their Spring convention in San Bernardino County.

The California Republican Assembly is California's largest GOP volunteer organization and works to uphold conservative values and principles in public policy. The organization is often called the "conscience of the Republican Party."

Despite not being an officially declared presidential candidate (or having an active presence at the Republican gathering), former US Senator Fred Dalton Thompson of Tennessee scored a huge upset, netting the votes of 28 CRA delegates. Tied for second place with 22 votes were California Congressman Duncan Hunter and ex-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

The following are unofficial results, provided on-site from the convention location by CRA activists Bob Rego and Scott Folkens of San Bernardino County:

1. Fred Thompson: 28 votes

2. Duncan Hunter: 22 votes

2. Mitt Romney: 22 votes

3. Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX): 14 votes

4. Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO): 9 votes

5. (tie) Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA): 8 votes

5. (tie) Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani: 8 votes

6. US Senator Sam Bownback (R-KS): 3 votes

US Senator John McCain, Former Cabinet Secretary Tommy Thompson, ex-Arkansas Guv Mike Huckabee all recieived zero votes in the CRA straw poll. Organizers failed to include former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore.

The California Republican Assembly is expected to soon issue a press statement on the results of their convention and the non-binding presidential straw poll.

Read the whole article. Look, I pay no attention to the NBA these days, but it’s Bill Simmons. He breaks it down. Well, somewhat.

Yes....evidently, supporters of candidate “x” think straw polls actually mean something when candidate “x” wins one in CA.....but then they think straw polls are meaningless if candidate “y” wins one in SC.....or candidate “z” wins one in TX.

Lemme get an accurate definition of hypocrisy....

The only polls that have real relevance in attempting to predict a vote 9 months from now are those with 400+ pollees that have been methodically vetted so that only “likely primary voters” are included.

Even then, this far out, THOSE polls only show name recognition, not even how well a campaing is going. The best poll to judge how well a campaign is going at this point is the money poll. Who’s raising the fat cash....but all THAT shows is fundraising skills.

After the summer, when the campaigns start pumping cash into ads that interrupt American Idol or whatever else the People are preoccupied with, THEN the Rassmussens and Zogby’s will be more relevant.

Right now, it’s all fluff and tease (they fluff, you get teased)......and I can’t wait until the Fall when things get heated.

Go Fred Go!!!!

I just hope he declares his candidacy soon. With the earliest primary schedule ever--the nominations will be likely decided by next February (only 9 months or so from now!!). Fred needs to declare soon!!

Every day he waits--only serves to help JulieAnnie--as it delays the EXTRA FOCUS that is so badly needed on Rudy's liberal record.

Run, Fred, Run!!!

Are straw polls more relevant when the other non-Fred candidates win them in SC? Or TX? Or NH?

Fluff and tease...guess some people like it.

I agree. Only a conservative can unite a Party whose traditional base is CONSERVATIVE!!!

If you want to SPLIT and DIVIDE the Republican Party WIDE OPEN--

JULIEANNIE IS THE RIGHT MAN,,,,AT THE RIGHT TIME!!
