This is so sad.

I have seen the Blue Angels perform so many times. Every time my pride in the US Military increases as does my heartrate.

They perform here on Long Island every other year. The take off from Airport by my house and we get a great show all weekend.

They do not have alternates.

If a plane or a pilot is unable to perform, they go without that position for the show.

the practices are usually during the week

When we'd vacation at Perdido Key FL, we'd always go see the Blue Angels stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station at least once during our week there. They are just awesome to watch! Sometimes they even join the crowd after the show to sign autographs!

Has anyone said which squadron this was, or which naval base was their home?

I’m not sure I understand your question... a Marine plane?

According to my brouchure, Planes and pilots are as follows:

#1 - CDR Kevin Mannix, USN (Flight leader, commanding officer)
#2 - LCDR Anthony Walley, USN (Right Wing)
#3 - CAPT Clint Harris, USMC (Left Wing)
#4 - LCDR Thomas Winkler, USN (Slot pilot)
#5 - LCDR John Allison, USN (Lead SOlo)
#6 - LCDR Kevin Davis, USN (Opposing solo)

RIP Kevin.

Condolences, Team Blue.

I hate air demo teams. We assign our best and brightest and then kill them. Over what? Entertainment. Terrible waste, IMO, and I was a jet pilot and even tested the first Blue Angel A-4 at Mojave.

#6 is LCDR Kevin Davis.

That name sounds familiar. Was this squadron out of the Pensacola Naval Air Station?

It’s the one from Pensacola - I have their flight schedule and Beaufort was on it.

There is no way that a Blue Angel any military pilot would eject without steering the airplane away from homes.

This is a media invention, and it needs to STOP.

People, if a pilot could still control a jet to 'steer' it away from homes, would it not occur that the plane would not need to crash at all?

This comment about steering aircraft away from homes, people, etc, is just nonsense, it is about hero-worship, and has NOTHING to do with reality. This crap started in the movies.

When a pilot loses control of a jet, his job is to GET OUT, so that the millions spent training him/her are not wasted in death.

I know it is nice to think that someone in their last moment did a noble thing, but face it, if a pilot could steer a disabled plane anywhere, it would be UP.

Now, obviously, I am upset right now, but I am so tired of this garbage, I felt the need to set the record straight.

So, knock it off!

Lots of kids grow up to be airmen because of the Blue Angels. It’s more than entertainment.

Great pictures, thanks. I caught a Blue Angels show in Knoxville, Tennessee a few years back, and there is no way pictures or television can convey the awesome power of these aircraft and the superhuman agility of their pilots. During that show, I was filled with a childlike wonder I hadn’t experienced since I was...well...a child. I would even say it was a life-changing experience, as the incredible ability of those pilots is a stark representation of the amazing things man is capable of, and inspired me to improve upon my existing skills, and take on new ones.

Prayers to the lost pilot’s family, friends and colleagues.

It could be that there is a female pilot for ‘Fat Albert’, the plane that carries the support crew from the home base to the shows.
