I hate to say it again, but guess it has to be said:
Free Republic is a conservative site.
As a conservative site, we are pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-liberty, pro-America.
Like-minded folks know immediately what this means and why we will never "move on from abortion" as Rudy Giuliani and his supporters ask us to do.
Think about it.
You might as well be asking us to deny God. To deny the Creator that gave us life and liberty. To give up our children. To surrender our country to the left. To give up our freedom. To give up our faith and our belief in God's Word.
Why insult us like this?
IMHO, the root difference between conservatism and liberalism IS our belief in God. For the most part, we conservatives defend our Christian/Judeo founding and our God-centered traditional American society and family values system, and the belief that our most fundamental rights were bestowed upon us by our Creator. Rights given by man can be taken by man. Rights bestowed by God are unalienable rights.
Liberals, on the other hand, especially the Marxist/socialist liberal leadership and the big leftist feminist, homosexualist, abortionist, anti-religion organizations deny God exists. They deny our Christian/Judeo heritage, work overtime to destroy our traditional family values, and seek to destroy our freedoms, including, and especially our right to the free exercise of religion.
Our deeply rooted conservative belief in God and refusal to roll over for feminism, abortionism, homosexualism, socialism, etc., is the only thing stopping the left from completely overwhelming us with their godless, socialist perversions and completely wiping out our traditional Christian/Judeo God-centered free society.
If we cave-in to the left by nominating a supporter of abortion rights, gay rights, gun control, illegal aliens, etc., as our candidate for the presidency and de facto leader of the Republican party, then we will have destroyed our own pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-liberty movement and will have destroyed all of our prior pro-life, pro family, pro-liberty work. The Republican party will have made itself a joke. It'll be left standing for nothing. Worse, it'll be left standing with NARAL, NOW, the ACLU, and every other feminist/homosexualist Marxist/socialist communist group.
Surrender to the abortionists? Not on your life!
This is Free Republic. We ARE the dissent! We fight for life and liberty! We fight for our traditional American family values! We proudly and diligently defend our Christian/Judeo heritage, our country, our constitution, and our right to be free and to freely worship our God!
IMHO, those of you who cannot or will not understand these simple truths will never understand what FR is all about, what the pro-life movement is all about, what conservatism is all about, or even what freedom is all about.
“Hey I beg to differ...Nixon was pretty liberal and so was Ford (although he never won).”
Rudy is WAY to the left of Nixon and Ford.
Draft Fred bump.
I'm going to have a lot of trouble voting for Rudy for a lot of reasons.
And I'm sorry to say that most of the country is way to the left of Nixon or Ford now too.
Your extra exclamation points convinced me.
Sorry to poke my nose in, but you're telling a poster who appears to have been on this site over 3 years longer than you to go back to DU? As a newer poster, I'm taken aback by this.
And while I haven't been here as long as many, I have been here long enough to notice a real decline in civility, from both ends of the conservative spectrum.
Jim, try telling that to the Libertarians here that insist any government action on abortion is an affront to personal liberty.
Thank God the Rat infestation is only about 10% here.
Anyway, I wasn't saying that conservatives shoudn't fight hard. They should just realize that even if they get their way, they are going to need RINOs too if they hope to win... so let's not be too nasty or hard on those who like Rudy. He gave a hell of a speech at the 2004 convention for Dubya and on issues like the War on Terror he's a far sight better than ANYONE the donks are going to put up. I'm not a Rudy supporter but I'll hold my nose if I have to.
Hey I'm looking for some place to be a snow bird when I retire. I've given up on Florida... too mamy rats. Maybe I'll look to Texas. I think I could be very happy there. I respect the freedom and the pride.
Zing. Ouch.
Well, Guiliani certainly ain't the ticket for that. Fred Thompson sounds more like someone who fits the bill -- conservative, but not an ideologue, charismatic, well-liked, consistent, honest, and a track record of winning big using unconventional methods.
What are we conserving (defending) as conservatives?
We are defending our constitutional principles. We are defending our rights, freedoms and liberty. We are defending our nation, our national sovereignty and our borders. We are defending constitutionally limited (small) government. We are defending sound fiscal and tax policies. We are defending ourselves, our families, our property, our society and our public institutions. We are defending our traditional American heritage and values.
What is our American heritage and where do our rights and values come from? Who settled America and why did they come here? Why did they split from England? What freedoms were they looking for? Who fought the Revolutionary War and what were their reasons? They’re values? What sort of men were they and what philosophy did they subscribe to? Who or what was their guiding light? How did they develop our founding documents and our system of laws and government?
Were they not devout believers? Were they not men of God? Is our system of government not designed on Judeo/Christian principles? Is not our traditional way of life and society God-centered and hasn't it been so all down through history for hundreds of years?
If all of the above is true (and it is) then why would we not say that the root of conservatism is our belief in God?
There's going to be some real disappointed conservatives if Thompson doesn't run. People will I suppose turn back to Hunter as the great Conservative hope. I was worried when the stories of Thompson's cancer came out. I really don't know Thompson so much (beyond movie appearances). I hope he's articulate and I'm assuming his acting roles have made him media savvy. We've really taken a beating in that area.
That has all the appearances of a pre-announcement disclosure -- making sure it won't cause people to turn away from him.
We've really taken a beating in that area.
That we have. From what I've seen, Thompson is very capable of articulating conservative views in plain, common, direct language. He also appears to realize that he needs to take his case directly to the public, not to try and make nice with Congress (the latter doesn't hurt, of course, but see where it's gotten Bush without the former?)
Hey I'm looking for some place to be a snow bird when I retire. I've given up on Florida... too mamy rats. Maybe I'll look to Texas. I think I could be very happy there. I respect the freedom and the pride.
I meant here at FR. But here in Texas there are a lot of rats too, especially Austin.
You think? I didn't get that impression at all. Still, there are a ton of those women out there who'd like to vote Republican but are scared abortion will be made illegal. I've argued with so many of them and they really just don't care, they don't want abortion illegal and that's all they care about. I don't know what percentage of the female population they represent but I'd bet it's more than 51%.
Backing Rudy around FR is viewed by most FReepers as betraying conservatism. Selling out your principles. I don't think Rudy or his supporters will ever be given the benefit of the doubt by most Freepers for that matter and rightly so.

Aside from his low key public display immediately following the 9-11 attacks, I've never been impressed by Rudy Giuliani. Obviously many people are impressed. I think once conservative folks get to know Rudy`s lifetime record of supporting liberal issues and liberal causes, they'll quickly backoff supporting him.
Rudy is the wrong man for the job of POTUS.
