I’m thinking extra-marital affair, maybe with a subordinate. Just a guess, though.

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2007/04/navy_prowler_fired_070416/ Rankin is under an internal Navy investigation on unspecified charges, said Cmdr. Kevin Aandahl, a spokesman for the 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. Aandahl would give no details about the case because he said there is a chance Rankin could face criminal charges.

I wonder what happened. Since he couldn't have run his ship into anything I'm guessing affair with a subordinate or sexual harassment.

From the Seattle paper:
Rankin is the latest in a long line of Navy skippers to be fired in recent years. Commanders can be relieved for a variety of reasons, such as breaking the wartime rules of engagement or failing to enforce safety measures. Other such offenses as adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer could lead to dismissal.
In a 13-month period alone from 2003 to 2004, according to a Navy Times report, 20 U.S. Navy skippers were fired.

"due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command," That's a catch-all phrase. It could be anything from sexual affairs to DUIs to poor aircraft maintenance evaluations. We usually don't find out what the real story is.

I wonder what happened. Me, too.
