Summation of Virginia Tech killer's ties to Islam

The following are ties Cho had to Islam. They are not offered as proof of anything, but merely to prompt consideration or disproof of any links.

Cho’s father lived in Saudi Arabia as a young, single man. His sister works for a State Department contractor which oversees billions of dollars of aid for Iraq. Previously, she worked in Bangkok. (1)

Both of Cho’s plays are about sexual abuse. (2) Bangkok is a city famous for its sex trade, which caters especially to Muslim businessmen.

Cho’s rampage was on Holocaust Remembrance day. Although probably a happenstance, one of the professors he killed was a Jewish holocaust survivor. (3)

Cho used the pseudonym Ismael Ax. Ismael (or, Ismail) is the son of Abraham who became the ancestor of all Arabs, as opposed to Israel who became ancestor of all Jews (4). Although there are many Western references to this person, and many literary characters named “Ishmael,” that spelling is Hebraic. “Ismael” or “Ismail” is uniquely Arabic. Ismaili is also a branch of Shiite Islam (5)

In each play, Cho’s characters rant about the horrible decadence of American life. Targets include McDonalds, the Roman Catholic church, Michael Jackson and the NFL. (2).

Cho is from Fairfax County, Virginia. This is also the home of 1 in 8 Virginians, but it is also the home of Yong Ki Kwon, a 29-year-old graduate of Virginia Tech, who, like Cho, is also from South Korea. Kwon was convicted of terrorism, one of the so-called “paintball Jihadis,” who practiced massacres with paintball guns. (6)

I sometimes get the idea that some FReepers are hopeful that this guy was a Muslim.

There are others who are hopeful that he wasn't.

I really don’t mean to suggest his sister did anything wrong at all, or that the U.S. government should have been leary of hiring her. My only point was this: When I found out that the killer was South Korean, I immediately disgregarded any notion that the killer had any Islamofascist motives, since South Koreans aren’t known for ties to Islam. Many Muslim terrorists are converts, but I considered it unlikely that an American immigrant from Korea would have any sufficient exposure to radical Islam. If his sister were an expert in Islam, however, it may suggest that her studies provided some kindling for a curiousity in Islam in him, even if her interests were opposite his.

Interesting post over on the NBC thread:

Did you see the film? If I didn’t know better, I’d say this was a recent convert to Islam. I’ve never seen such hatred. Ironic that he consumed that which he berated the consumption of. Perhaps that’s why he off’d himself; maybe he couldn’t stand the hypocrite he became.

That's because they will feel safer if he was a Muslim

I believe that's pretty much it.

"....Isaac and Ishmael were brothers......"

Half brothers. Same father (Abraham) but different mothers.

Sarah was Isaac's mother; Hagar was Ishmael's mother.

You mean aren't known by you. there are multitudes of us who know that the high-point overlooking the large US Army Base in Seoul is the location of a huge Mosque. Don't assume that nobody knows that which you don't know.

Yes, there are counter-indicators. He was NUTS. Severely MENTALLY ILL. Everything evil is not because of Islam. Everyone evil is not a terrorist.

And every Terrorist is not Islamic.

And I’m embarrassed for all the FReepers who will grasp at these same straws.

How many times will I have to read “Smells like jihad to me”

“Look, I’m not out to prove anything, I’m in fact-gathering mode, and I presumed many other FReepers might also be.”

Considering the number of terrorist events over the past decades, including 9/11 and many that have followed, I fail to understand why so many freepers would NOT at least think he might be tied in some way to Islamic terrorists — or at least their ideology.

The railing against Western values always seems to be a huge part of terrorist thinking. Though he might not have been a card-carrying member of a terrorist org., he still could have been a wannabe recruit — much like the kid in Tampa who flew a plane into a high rise.

As a certified Jewish conspirator on the leading edge of the anti-jihad, I have a better explanation: HE WAS BATS**T CRAZY.

Think about what you just posted. Are not Radical Islamists crazy, too?

Better wake up here at FR. There's entirely too much nay-saying going on here. Better wait for and analyze all the facts first before we give the final verdict.

I'm putting my money on Islamic Terrorist Sypathizer. Maybe a good excuse he used for self loathing and/or blaming others for his own wretchedness, which could be in the form of inadequacy with women, or a closet virgin. Who knows? It may surface later.

Maybe he had never been kissed, either. :>o

My point really is: He doesn't seem to blame anyone in particular, does he? Many mass murderers (maybe all of them) hate themselves and blame others (even innocent ones) for their own wretchedness, inadequacies and thus frustrations. Check it out - this is in the Psych 101 manual.

I suspect he was influenced by islam but to no more extent than the neo-nazi who goes in for a tattoo that says “white power” in German and the tattoo artist inscribes “Dumbkopf” on the guys arm.

"Everything evil is not because of Islam."

True, but isn't it rather ironic that a nutjob like Cho has so many similarities to Islamic followers? Think that might be a commentary on Islam? Hmm....

If you don’t believe he was a terrorist, ask your children or your neighbors children.. This gunman was a WMD and agent of the devil.. Spooks. Al Queda is watching in admiration . If he was one of them, they will follow him.
