Gonzo should have never been hired. He & Jorge have refused to do the jobs they were paid & swore to do which was & is to enforce the immigration laws of this country. And instead of coming forward and saying that the POTUS has the right to fire & hire any and all of the U.S. attorneys they choose; like the geldings they are; they apologize? What a couple of wimps! November, 2008 won't come soon enough for me...now if we only had a CONSERVATIVE with a set to vote for!

I’ll go along with this.

It’s bad policy to fire someone who is under fire by your enemies. But as long as it’s clear that he’s firing the bloody idiot because he’s an incompetent fool, then by all means fire him.

Gonzalez has never had a conservative constituency. It’s another instance of Bush confusing his personal friends and dinner guests with political allies.

Same disastrous misjudgment as Harriet Miers.

Here’s the summary of what every reasonable person should be thinking: The Bush administration has every right to decide whom to employ, but Gonzales is a dodgy, dishonest attorney general.

I’ve never really understood Bush’s nominating decisions. Yes-men don’t make for good policy.

Signatories to the letter include Bruce Fein

The thing loses all credibility right there. This ugly, hateful man has been trying to take down this Administration from the outse.

Gonzales was counsel at the White House, a much more political position.

When Charles Colson worked for Richard Nixon he was known as the “hatchet man.”

Colson dealt with the enemies.

The President through the Attorney General can fire these people whether there’s political motives or not.

Gonzales had the power to get rid of the U.S. Attorneys, but his politcal position and closeness to the President are being dragged in by the critics.

Yeah, but not for firing those attorneys...for not being a good enough attorney general.

the American Freedom Agenda, a recently formed body designed to promote conservative legal principles

Bull-loney.

SOME of their things I can agree with, but look at their overall agenda (they want to give legal rights, habeus corpus, to enemy combatants!. Look at their rhetoric towards George Bush as well:

http://www.americanfreedomagenda.org/

http://www.americanfreedomagenda.org/About/default.aspx

Restore habeas corpus for alleged alien enemy combatants, i.e., non-citizens who have allegedly participated in active hostilities against the United States, to protect the innocent;

No surprise you’d side with the Democrats against the President. You’re probably one of the biggest callers for impeachment.

"He has engendered the suspicion that partisan politics trumps evenhanded law enforcement in the Department of Justice."

So a group of conservatives are calling for a man to be fired because of the suspicion of partisan politics? Oh well, I see Bob Barr's name and run the other way.

Gonzales and the DOJ lost my support with the way they’ve handled Left wingers who are highly suspect in questionable dealings. Look at Papercut Sandy Burglar getting a slap on the wrist. Can anyone begin to imagine if a Republican Lawyer had done that for Bush or any other Republican Politician what would have taken place?

Fein, Keene, Viguerie, and Barr. Says it all.

I wouldn’t give these characters the sweat off my armpits or anywhere else.

Don’t bend to them, George W.! Fire Gonzo at some time when it doesn’t appear you’re bowing to the Democrats and Specter.

Please.

he’s a personal friend of the president.

so, i doubt that he will resign.

nor, do i think he should resign.

imo the problem with this administration is bending over for its critics.

I've been gone from FR for a few weeks, but if one hasn't already done so, I'd like to interject my 2 cents worth..

That this big to-do over Gonzalez and the US attorney firings (which BTW the populous doesn't give a one crap about) is really about throwing a wrench into the next SCOTUS appointment of the President, of which 1) Gonzo would be deeply involved, and 2) to corrupt the image of the President as someone who is objective in judicial appointments.

Perhaps the Dems know we're gonna have a new SCOTUS vacancy around the corner?..Hmmm..
