Democrats propose internet tax bill (CT)

(Hartford-WTNH) _ The Democrat's new plan calls for extending the 6% sales tax to all purchases on the internet. In order to do that, lawmakers will have to eliminate the exemption for clothing that costs less than $50.

Currently, when you buy an article of clothing that costs less than $50 in the state of Connecticut, it is tax free. It is a long-standing exemption aimed at helping people pay for the necessities.

"The clothing exemption would be eliminated and Mr. and Mrs. Connecticut will end up paying an additional $135-million in taxes on their clothing. It's a bad idea," said Senator William Nickerson.

Today the Finance Committee gives final approval to the Democrats tax plan that eliminates that exemption. They are doing it so they can tax your purchases on the internet. In order to join other states in collecting sales tax on internet purchases, the tax has to be on every dollar. Otherwise the state can not participate and will miss out on an estimated $500-million a year in sales tax revenue.

Governor Rell says it is not worth it to lose the $50-exemption.

"You're talking about a tax on the middle class," said Rell.

The Democrats on this committee feel their tax cuts will more than offset the loss of the $50-clothing exemption.

"We really have to do that to be part of the compact, and we think if we provide relief through another tax mechanism then the burden of paying tax on that first $50 of clothing won't be felt," said State Representative Cameron Staples.

In addition to the internet tax, the Democrat's plan also would hike the cigarette tax another 49-cents a pack.

I propose a tax on stupid ideas. It would lead to a tax surplus and a bankrupt Democratic party.

What is the "compact" that the state representative quoted in the article refers to? Apparently, this is some agreement of collusion between some states to monitor the 'Net in order to collect state sales taxes off it.

Has Congress approved of this compact? If not it is unconstitutional.

Can someone please fill me in on the history of state taxation of Internet puchases? When was it first approved by Congress, if ever?

If this passes in Connecticut — it will roll across the country.

I buy almost everything online these days — especially big-ticket items — to avoid paying any local sales tax. I buy almost nothing locally, except food. My state just wastes all the state tax revenues, anyway.

Why should I pay for education (I don’t have kids), infrastructure (I’ll move to a different state if it gets really bad), government pension funds (let them eat cat food), hospitals (only illegals use them anyway), police (I have a gun), firemen (I rent and have insurance), parks and libraries (I never use them)?

Sales tax is evil.

I have an idea; let’s pass a law that any law maker in the United States who either proposes a tax law or votes for increased taxes or user fees for the government be required to under go public execution for his or her act.

Then we will see really how much they want the money, and if they have the guts to really stand up for their convictions.

Actions once again need to connected to consequences for this government to mean anything!

I suspect this is in reference to the Streamlined Sales Tax that a unch of blue states are hoping to force internet businesses to collect. See here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/01/AR2005070101475.html

Minor leaguers.

The rats in my state want to tax haircuts, bottled water in offices and the fish you catch, plus buy i-pods for every kid.

And it’s all Bush’s fault.

A $50 clothing exemption is nothing these days. Notice though how the Democrats move to raise taxes instead of indexing an exemption so it keeps pace with inflation. Heck, the government ALWAYS needs money! We poor peons don't.

What passes for journalism in 2007 wouldn't have made it through fifth grade in 1957.

Reporters aren't expected to know good grammar. That's the province of Mr. Davis' editor.

Nowadays, a Journalism degree is a badge of ignorance.

I’m surprised our governor (MI), Canadian Trash Jenny, isn’t coming up with a scheme to enforce this. She’s pushing for a 2% sales tax on services, so why should she stop there?

We’ve got a line on our state income tax form to “voluntarily” put down the amount we owe on internet purchases. Given her love of socialism and taxes, I’m shocked she hasn’t found a way to enforce it.

(Sorry, Puppage, I don't want to co-op your thread by being the grammar police. I just can't stand the stupidity any more. I know you just transcribed the article as written.)

Not at all.My late mother was a big stickler on grammer.I hated it then, but 35 years later I am so glad she was.

Finally it dawned on me... Now I understand why Al Gore “invented” the internet. Another source of TAX revenue... seems like that’s the only thing they’re good at. We should call them Taxacrats.

You bet. If someone had offered me odds that someone could write an absolutely hilarious book about punctuation, I'd have lost a bundle.

That book ought to be required reading for every 'English' teacher and every editor on the planet!
