Drudge still has nothing...how can they be that far behind?

He's too busy trying to be the National Enquirer or News Of The Weird, these days. The Drudge siren doesn't mean that much anymore.

Breaking News: Police arrest suspect in Va. Tech shootings, additional casualties reported

11:16 AM EDT on Monday, April 16, 2007

Associated Press

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Officials have told The Associated Press a gunman suspected in one killing and seven to eight additional casualties at Virginia Tech has been arrested.

Earlier, Virginia Tech officials canceled classes for the day and students were warned to stay inside and stay away from windows.

A state government official with knowledge of the incident told The Associated Press that at least one person was killed by the shooter and another was wounded. It was later reported that there were seven to eight additional casualties. No further information about their condition has been released.

School officials say the shooting happened earlier this morning at West Ambler Johnston Hall, one of the largest dorms on campus. It houses nearly 900 students.

Officials ordered the 2600-acre campus closed and no one will be allowed on campus.

Nineteen-year-old student Jason Anthony Smith of Culpeper lives in the dorm, known as "West A-J." He told The Associated Press,

"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on." Smith says police are yelling at students to stay inside.

The shooting incident was the second at the school in less than one year.

Last August, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard and a sheriff's deputy involved in a massive manhunt.

These are my best guesses:

1. They arrested the wrong guy from the 7:15 shooting and the second shooting was by the same lone gunman.

or

2. After the first shooting was over, the Police were sweeping the campus for evidence, etc., came across the second guy, who got paranoid, thought the police were coming for him and started shooting.

I worked as a faculty member at Virginia Tech for 13 years before moving to another university recently. I’m familiar with the campus and will post a few comments to familiarize folks with the area.

The www.vt.edu web site is very slow in responding, so it’s probably best that we don’t hit it too much and leave the bandwidth for parents and others close to the situation.

The Ambler-Johnston residence hall complex is on the east side of campus and right across the street from the tennis courts and basketball arena/atheletics complex, so all of the references to that area may have been associated with a single gunman in that part of campus.

Burrus Hall, McBryde Hall and Norris hall are all on the west side of campus in the same general area. They are separated from Ambler-Johnston by 1/2 mile and a large open field called the ‘Drill Field’. It’s hard to imagine a gunman moving between those two areas in such a short period of time if there were a large law enforcement presence out looking for him, so there may well be two separate incidents.

Norris hall houses the Mechanical Engineering department. It is directly adjacent to Burrus Hall which is the main administration building and the section of Burrus hall devoted to admissions and registration actually faces Norris hall. To a student walking by McBryde Hall (which houses the computer science department), gunshots at Norris Hall would sound like they were coming from behind McBryde.

Montgomery Regional Hospital is very close to campus, probably only 5 or 6 minutes when driving at high speeed. As another poster pointed out, it is pretty well-equiped for a small town hospital, but the emergency room is not that large.

They need sterile foot covers to put over top of shoes? Maybe the local hospital is running short.
