My heart aches for all those who will be receiving tragic news today.

Mine too. My youngest is away at college and I can't imagine what it must be like for the parents of those students watching this massacre unfold. It's truly heartbreaking.

I posted this upthread and no one commented.

MSNBC had a telephone interview with a student who was shot in the upper arm. The student is a sophomore majoring in biochemistry and he was in a Norris Hall classroom. He told MSNBC that the shooter was college-aged male, Asian, and wearing a maroon cap and leather jacket. The student said that his professor was shot. He said that he and other students barricaded the door to keep the shooter out. He said that the shooter did not appear to be looking for anyone and that the victims were randomly shot.

My point is, if you are 21 you have a right to drink alcahol, but you cannot go to class with alchahol, you cannot go into sports games with alcahol. I have no problem with someone having the right to carry, but in college class rooms isn’t the place.

I bet if you had been in that room, and someone entered and starting shooting people, you'd have a different opinion.

If there had been a teacher at Columbine with a firearm, just imagine the chance lives would have been saved. Same goes here. What we need, are more armed citizens.

Washington Times Bill Sammon’s children attend there.

I think Steve Ducey's son is there also.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no immediate evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack...

I am not sure of the religion of the shooter but I do know that this was a Terrorist Attack.

They’re not saying anything about the shooter yet.

Oh, dear. Someone else just said 32. I guess he shot himself, too bad. I’d love to see him get the chair for this.

Thanx for the good context. The kneejerk gun control questions to the prez today remind me of Chelsea Clinton’s initial response on 9/11 :” What I’m most worried about is that people are hurt and they might not have access to proper healthcare.”

My sister is a US Govt employee at VaTech. We just made contact with her.

Thank God she was in Wash D.C. today. She says that some of the shooting was in one of the 3 buildings in which she normally does business. I don’t know which.

FOX has been reporting that due to the high winds they could not use helicopters to evacuate the wounded to trauma centers. Many of the wounded had to be taken in police cars.

So I agree with you, many of these fatalities are most likely due to the fact that immediate emergency care was unavailable. Horrific events today.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no immediate evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, “but all avenues will be explored.”

That's not the usual "no link to terrorism" denial by the FBI.

THey might be wearing hospital booties to preserve trace evidence; not contaminate the scene.

“Without question this was a terrorist attack not matter what their religion.”

Possible. But I’ll be shocked if it is an Inslamic terrorist attack. Doesn’t fit the profile. A “martyr” would have gone into freshman history with 200 students and blown themselves up. Walking around killing people doesn’t fit the radical islamic jihadist pattern.

I should spend my life in a hole because being surrounded by armed students would make me uncomfortable? It isn’t your typical permit-holding gun carrier that would make me uncomfortable. It’s the random idiots who would carry his/her gun to class bnecause he/she LOVE GUNS. Don’t act like those people don’t exist and aren’t plentiful. Should we be able to carry guns into stadiums too? I’m not an advocate of gun-conrol but I don’t think the solution to this problem is to allow students to take guns into classrooms. Faculty? Sure. I know way too many people who I wouldn’t want carrying a gun on campus.

Parents are going to sue the school into the ground, claiming classes shouldn't have been in session today, given the latest bomb threat was less than 72 hours prior to the first shots fired today, first school day since the threat, building(s) should have remained closed, etc.

This alert/article from the school's web site was just published after business hours this past Friday...

Bomb threat closes Torgersen, Durham, Whittemore halls; events relocated; $5,000 reward offered

By Larry Hincker

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 13, 2007 -- (6:15 p.m. EDT) Virginia Tech is offering a $5,000 reward related to the two recent bomb threats on campus.

The reward will be given for information or leads leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in either bomb threat incidents occurring April 2 or April 13.

Information should be directed to Virginia Tech Police at 232-TIPP (8477).

Virginia Tech Police, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, continue to investigate both incidents.

--------------------

(6 p.m. EDT) Due to the closing of Torgersen, Durham, and Whittemore halls as a result of a bomb threat, the locations of the following events scheduled this weekend in those buildings have been changed:

* Hokie Focus: Please come to Burruss Hall Lobby between 8:30 and 9 a.m. to check in and receive instructions for specific Hokie Focus events.

* The Wittgenstein Conference scheduled for 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Saturday has been moved from 1000 Torgersen Hall to 110 Holden Hall.

--------------------

April 13, 2007, 3 p.m. EDT--Because of a bomb threat, Virginia Tech is immediately closing the following three buildings: Torgersen, Durham, and Whittemore halls.

Classes in these three buildings are cancelled for the remainder of the day.

The three buildings will remain closed until further notice.

Traffic will be restricted on campus roadways including the Alumni Mall.

Activities scheduled in these buildings for tonight and this weekend will be rescheduled. Go to www.vt.edu for further information.

All faculty, staff, administrators, and graduate students who work in Torgersen, Durham, and Whittemore halls are asked to immediately report to the Burruss Hall Auditorium for further information.

Blacksburg Transit will also be rescheduled. Look for further information.
