U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday that radio host Don Imus' comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball team were "disgusting" and she was pleased he was fired.
Imus called the women players "nappy-headed hos" -- racist, sexist remarks that resulted in a barrage of protests and ultimately in the outspoken host losing his CBS Radio show, which was also televised.
"I'm very glad that there was, in fact, a consequence. I think that this kind of coarse language doesn't belong anywhere in reasonable dialogue between reasonable people," Rice said in an interview with syndicated radio show host Michael Medved.
Rice, the first black female U.S. Secretary of State and a former college professor, said the young women Imus targeted were fine athletes trying their best.
"It gets ruined by this disgusting -- and I'll use the word 'disgusting' -- comment which doesn't belong in any polite company and certainly doesn't belong on any radio station that I would listen to," she added.
Asked how she handled racist, sexist comments directed her way, Rice laughed and replied: "I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself. And I really don't care because, you know, I'm a mature woman

He was fired by his employer. They have every right to censor him when they pay him and provide the forum from which to speak.
The First Amendment guarantees only that the government cannot punish you for your speech. It does not guarantee you a forum from which to speak, or an audience willing to listen.

I don’t understand that comment. No governmental entity fired Imus. His private employers did, which is their right (and probably smart, given the abandonment of Imus by the show’s sponsors). Rice is a governmental employee, but she is also a citizen, and has the right to express hereself also. If SHE were fired for her comments, THAT would be governmental action contrary to her rights.
I still am missing your point. The government did nothing to get Imus off the air.
Condi has been called far worse, and those cartoons are horrible. She is a tough, strong adult woman and can take it but it still must have hurt her as a woman and a person. I believe she she felt compassion for those young ladies, and felt glad someone who insulted them from a purely racial perspective got smacked. I believe Condi was expressing a personal feeling. That's all.

It’s a big disappointment that she feels that way. Let’s “be real” about this, what he said was disgusting in it’s poor taste, and most uncivil, but now that he’s been fired, that same standard has to be used with ALL offenders, or else why just fire Imus? IS THIS BASKETBALL TEAM MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYONE ELSE? WHAT ABOUT OTHER GROUPS, NATIONALITIES AND RACES THAT HAVE BEEN INSULTED AND DEFAMED IN THE PAST AND IN THE FUTURE? IS IT STILL OKAY TO SLANDER OTHER GROUPS? IF SO, WHY?? Imus shouldn’t have been fired, particularly at the urging of those two immoral clowns Jackson and Sharpton. Go after Chris Rock’s little ass next! He’s always insulting white people in his so-called comedy routines. Why is he allowed to get away with it? All KINDS OF HELL NEEDS TO BE RAISED FROM NOW ON! If I were in her position, there are at least a thousand other things that nobody else is saying that needs to be said.
I really admire Rice. Her involvement in this issue seems to be somewhat out of character, and it looks like what a candidate would say if intending to run.

By welcoming them into the political process in Gaza, or at the least encouraging it, that is exactly what she did. Maybe it was just naive of her to think the Palestinians would “choose freedom.” In that case she’s not fit for the job.
