just out of curiosity, do you think FReepers are, as a group, STUPID???No, i have a great deal of respect for most Freepers, including the of the Lost Causers , even if I disagree with them. You, I alternate between "stupid" and "delusional."

Condemnation by the exercise of eminent domain. Expropriation. Nationalization. Confiscation. Conscription. Federal property is not subject to eminent domain.

LOL!
Reminds me of an XGF who, when losing at an argument, would tell me, “I talked to everyone at work about our fight last night and 5 out of 6 agreed with ME!”
She just wasn’t smart enough to recognize what an idiot she had just made herself sound like for admitting that she went shopping for sympathy ;’}

get the message: they think, to quote one of them, that you're GARBAGE in human form. FEW here on FR are willing to read the BILGE that you spew out like, so much manure. even FEWER are willing to talk TO you. otoh, they are CORRECT about you. you ARE a CREEP.
head over to DU;they like TROLLS/FOOLS/HATERS over there. why not take the members of "The STUPID Club" with you. ( 2 of them will even BELIEVE your hate-FILLED,simplistic, DIShonest bilge. but then, they will believe ANYTHING!).
laughing AT you, TROLL.

and you would, as usual, be WRONG, as well as a TROLL & a CREEP.
pity, that you don't KNOW just how despised you are by most here.
laughing AT you, TROLL.

NOPE. "my correspondents" do NOT wish to LOWER themselves by posting TO him. (that is NOT my opinion. it is pure FACT.)
i, otoh, like "blood sports" & i want him to LIE/RANT, as every post damages the unionists & "costs them friends." thus, his BEING on FR helps the dixie cause of LIBERTY.
also, truthfully, i ENJOY abusing CREEPS/BIGOTS. (that is ONE of my LEGION of failings.)

finally, your XGF was correct.
she WAS right;you, otoh, are DEAD WRONG & LOST the argument, inasmuch as you were born MALE.
one of the many things you'll learn WHEN you GROW UP is that women almost ALWAYS win, in the end. ===>CHUCKLE!

Oh, and the other thing that post reminded me of was its pure, almost perfect expression of liberal projection. Truly an amazing display!
The thing of it is, these threads on the Civil War are fascinating to me. Regardless of which side of the debate one finds himself, the devotion to history and the passion whith which it is argued is remarkable.
Of course the posts run the entire gamut, from the sublime to, well, you know...;’}

In Memory of the Gallant Southern Soldiers who died defending their Constitutional Rights! Amen brother!

Federal property is not subject to eminent domain. Quite true -- in States that are still in the Union. Given the fact of secession, the United States Government becomes just another private propertyholder.
To: TexConfederate1861
I can concede, but I always thought that Johnston’s death was the damper on the Confederate drive towards the river, etc. It certainly did, it took the subordinate generals what, an hour? Two hours? to sort things out -- and so did the Hornet's Nest, until Col. Ruggle lined up all the artillery in one big battery.
Trouble was, those two developments took most of the afternoon. Johnston got shot about two o'clock, and the Confederates didn't reach the Union last-ditch defenses until nearly seven.

No, assuming for the sake of arguement that the South was independent, in that case it would make Sumter foreign territory. No different that an embassy or a consulate. You can't seize that without war.

Genealogist here. It would be pretty unlikely that the enumerator would likely listed Watie as owning slaves without that truly being the case. I am a member of the SAR, and census data is accepted as primary documentation. Though IMO, it is probably the weakest in light how often people lied to the enumuarator. I have an example where one of my gggg grandfathers told them he was born in a different state every 10 years 1850, 60, 70, and 80.
Probably the best proof would be if there were some probate records which the transfer of slaves as property took place.
Send me the data and I will verify.

In my ggg grandfather's widow's pension record (10th Arkansas Infantry) it is stated he was shot while being about 150 feet from General Johnston.
Are there any good books or references that I can track regimental movement to tie this to a locaton?

send me a private message with his name, unit, hometown, etc. & i'll look him up the next time that i'm at the center.
i think the center has every PUBLISHED unit history, plus all the service records of the south's military forces.
also, if you'll give me a snail-mail address, i'll copy what they have &mail it to you.

You might try the pamphlet collection of the National Park Service. They had some battlefield maps. Of course, I'm trying to remember stuff from the '80's.....
I'd start with an online search, and then get with a research librarian at any good-sized library (county, big-city, any college campus that will let you use their services).

Hi,
stand, that's a generous offer of help, and I'm afraid you're a lot more help than I've been.
The other thing I was going to suggest.....if you can find the title of his regimental history, there are some bookstores that can try to get him a copy. Brown Bookstore has a good service, I've gotten obscure reprints from them before (a Ares Press reprint of an etymological dictionary of ancient Greek, for instance -- one originally put out in 1910 or something). I'm sure there are others.
