George Will: Fred Thompson Ain't All That ...
Matt Lewis ^ | 4/7/07

Posted on 04/07/2007 4:48:57 PM PDT by Valin

Columnist George Will is taking a few shots at Fred Thompson:

Thompson has never had to show consuming energy as a candidate, never having been in a closely contested race. He won his two elections with 60 percent of the Tennessee vote in 1994 (for the remaining two years of Al Gore's Senate term) and 61 percent in 1996. He did not seek reelection in 2002 -- not a painful sacrifice for a man who disliked the Senate: "I'm not 30 years old. I don't want to spend the rest of my life up here. I don't like spending 14- and 16-hour days voting on 'sense of the Senate' resolutions on irrelevant matters."

... Is he wise? As a senator he insistently advocated increasing the government's regulation of politics. One of only four senators who supported John McCain's candidacy in 2000, Thompson argued for the McCain-Feingold legislation that regulates the content, timing and amount of political speech.

In 1996, Thompson worked successfully, unfortunately, to preserve the (currently collapsing) system of public financing of presidential campaigns. His arguments were replete with all the rhetoric standard among advocates of government regulation of political speech: Government regulation of politics is necessary to dispel "cynicism" about government (has that worked?), to create a "level playing field" and to prevent politics from being "awash with money" (Congressional Record, May 20, 1996).

George Will seems to be complaining that Fred is too lazy to be president. People complained that Ike was lazy too,

They also said that Reagan was lazy. Maybe even Georgie did?

This was the most energetic president in my life time. Definitely not lazy.

He even carried his own bags.

George Will worships the ground Giuliani walks on. He’s absolutely in awe of him.

Seeing him attacking Fred Thompson is a very good sign. The bots are getting nervous.

Why is that Fred's fault, that the Dims couldn't muster a worthy opponent?

I'm not even convinced that Fred is a good candidate at this stage, almost two years from the election, but....Will, no doubt a smart guy, is being just plain dumb on this.

Yo, George. Make sure that your gig at ABC is secure. You just screwed up any chance you had of a job in the next administration.

More and more, particularly after Fred's column at RedState today.

I'm really proud that I am now an adopted Tennessean ( 20 years ought to qualify me). Fred's da man!  And he's one of OURS!  By the way, that "ours" includes a lot more than Tennesseans.

Will hasn’t been a relevant analyst in years. His brand of conservatism is as goofy and antiquated as his bow tie.

Bow tie = liberal...

That makes no sense to me. Giuliani is no conservative, and seems to represent so much of what I though Will stood against.

George Will only pretends to care about social conservativism.

Then why is he shilling for Rudy, an outspoken proponent of McCain-Feingold?

I haven’t read George Will in years. So tell me, who is he supporting?

Somebody with better conservative credentials than Thompson?

I don't know who his "dream candidate" is for President in 2008 but I can see how things are going on FR by some members.

Why does each and every day bring more attacks on Republican candidates? First it was attacks on McCain when he was the front runner, then when Rudy started to gain the attacks started, then Rommney. Now that Fred Thompson might run and is gaining in support the attacks start.

Personally I haven't begun picking a candidate at this stage. It's too early! So, I haven't ruled any candidate in or out. The only candidate so far that I have a significant problem with is McCain and I would vote for him over Hitlery or Obama.

I can see how it is with some here though. If it isn't Tancredo or Duncan Hunter, our candidate will not be good enough.

Read Will’s column from March 8, titled “Three Good Options for The Right”:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/07/AR2007030702043.html

Notice how Will makes excuses for the departuress of each member of the Rudy McRomney trio on conservative principles, but he’s gets all over Fred Thompson’s case for FDT’s few departures from conservative orthodoxy.

Also, see how Will touts McCain’s 82 percent lifetime ACU rating (without mentioning that it was only a miserable 65 for 2006) in the March 8 column and never mentions Fred Thompson’s lifetime rating of 86 in the more recent column. Sheesh, what a hypocrite!

Will is the Washington Post’s idea of what a “conservative” should be. And remember that it was the WaPo that gleefully colluded with the Webb campaign to smear George Allen relentlessly in the weeks leading up to the election.

The bow tie boy is just a CINO elitist who doesn’t trust the grassroots. The Frederalists are upsetting his tidy little Rudy McRomney apple cart, and he can’t stand it.

End of story.
