Hollywood star John Travolta was forced to make an emergency landing in Ireland on Monday while piloting his private Boeing 707 from Germany to New York.

The actor, who was flying back to the USA after promoting his new movie Wild Hogs in Germany, landed safely at Shannon Airport after his Boeing 707-138B suffered "technical difficulties", thought to be engine-related. He was said to be unhurt but shaken by the dramatic incident. The 53-year-old, the only private individual to own a Boeing 707, serial number N707JT, hired another aircraft and completed the journey while the 707 was grounded for repairs.

Eight years ago the star suffered a similar mid-air drama when his plane lost an engine and he was forced to make an emergency landing in Boston.

I’d bet the bio-jet-fuel gelled in a GlobalWarming-ClimateChange cold spell.

I'll trade you for some methane offsets I picked up by holding in a fart during a meeting yesterday ;-)

As a pilot, John Travolta did the right thing and did an outstanding job.

For those Freepers that have "Class Envy", you may be happier hanging out at the DU website.

For the rest of us, we consider someone enjoying the rewards of Capitalism, from hard work, as something to be enjoyed.

Not exactly like engine trouble in the Gremlin.

We are more than happy for his success, it is his lecturing us about conserving that reeks of hypocrisy.
Kinda like Cut&Run Kerry professing to be a war hero rather than a war protester.

They seem to have left out that he was flying this alone. Alone!

Someone help me out. Is it possible to fly a 707 alone?? Is there a minimum crew requirement, either by regulation or sheer necessity?

I’ll admit it would be pretty cool to own and fly your own 707.

The 707 is a very old design.

And his being a 707-138B means that it is in the -100 series, very old, one of the earliest

Must not have bought enough carbon credits to offset all the fuel that his jet uses.

Personally I would love to have the money to own and operate as many airplanes as he has. I know I would love to get into a career in aviation.

I don't think the FAA will allow a plane like the 707 to be flown solo.

I was told that Travolta owned a 777. Guess not.

He bought a 747 a few years ago, but I don't think the runway at the house can handle that.
