Orange County Register ^ | 4/2/2007

ESCONDIDO -- Relatives of a U.S. Border Patrol agent convicted of shooting a drug smuggling suspect in Texas and then lying about it spoke about the family's ordeal at a church service Sunday.

"It's just been a nightmare," Monica Ramos told an Escondido congregation. "I never thought I'd be standing here, being my husband's voice."

Ramos's husband, Ignacio Ramos, and fellow former agent Jose Alonso Compean were convicted last year of shooting Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, a drug smuggling suspect, as the man fled across the Rio Grande near El Paso, Texas, into Mexico after a confrontation with the agents.

Reading material is forbidden. The family and advocates have pleaded with prison officials to let Agent Ramos be provided with reading material. But prison staff state: they must enforce the rule: NO READING MATERIAL in solitary confinement.

The 911 Families sought to present Agent Ramos with a Holy Bible; prison officials stated Agent Ramos, in solitary confinement, could not receive the Holy Bible.

The 911 Families and members of congress contacted prison officials. After extreme pressure, the prison allowed Agent Ramos to receive the Bible. Agent Ramos is allowed no photos in his cell...sleeps on a cot. Agent Ramos can only read one book, the Bible, but:

AGENT RAMOS CAN READ ALL OF THE MAIL SENT TO HIM!

HERE IS THE REQUEST DIRECTLY FROM AGENT RAMOS BELOW:

Agent Ramos would like you to send him letters! His wife, Monica, and father-in-law, Joe, said yesterday: "PLEASE write to Agent Ramos America."

Monica said Agent Ramos used to receive about 50 letters a day - now he is only getting 10 letters a day. Or less. Agent Ramos said the prison staff gage how much America supports him via his mail volume.

PLEASE write Agent Ramos once a week or more! PLEASE get your children and grandchildren to send Agent Ramos a letter! Have your friends and relatives write a letter - hold an AGENT RAMOS LETTER WRITING party.

You cannot send him a postcard: ONLY a letter in an envelope.

The letters must be addressed EXACTLY as follows:

Ignacio Ramos #58079-180 FCI

Yazoo City Medium Federal Correctional Institution

P. O. Box 5888

Yazoo City, MS 39194

Bush’s fault.

Seriously. Bush’s refusal to pardon is pathetic in the extreme.

Bush’s fault , Hell!

Doesn’t stop there.

America’s fault.

If he is in solitary for PUNISHMENT, then I could understand the “no reading” order.

But isn’t he there for his own protection? So why is this other order being enforced?

Congress should investigate this nonsense. Patrick Leahy (chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee) should ask Gonzales about it.

I could import drugs across the border and sell them on the streets of LA, and get probation.

This looks like another example of the DOJ acting like a bureaucratic bully. (And I could give several other examples.)

Yeah, and it seems to be happening more and more. I would say Bush should've cleaned the DOJ out (along with the State Dept) and replaced it with true Conservatives but the way he's been acting on this issue I'm not so sure he wanted to in the first place.

Prayers for the agents and their families!

This is really an outrage. If Libby gets a pardon before Ramos, that will be the last straw.

Thanks, I will write a letter.

Note: The courts ruled that schools cannot deny an education to illegal immigrants. We pay for their books and teachers. Agent Ramos, who is in solitary confinement because his life is in danger, is not even allowed to read books to educate himself. Rapists and murderers can watch TV (the TV that we pay for) in prison.

What’s wrong with this picture?

I promise to write him a letter. This man is being treated worse than a war criminal!!

He could be given a pardon by the first Mexican President Bush with nothing but the stroke of a pen.

The wrong man is in solitary confinement, but sadly, he is still sitting in the White House while our border patrol agents rot in jail.

I'll encourage others to write too.

Why is agent Ramos in solitary confinement? What did he do to deserve that? Do you know?

>>Why is agent Ramos in solitary confinement? What did he do to deserve that? Do you know?<<

When he was in the “general population” of the prison some of the Hispanic inmates beat him severely, because he was “La Migra.” He is safer in solitary, but I don’t believe he “deserves” extra punisment. My opinion: either the federal corrections system doesn’t know what it is doing, or someone in that system is intentionally persecuting him.

This is a disgrace. Ever since I was 11 y/o I would help my father with Republican campaigns. You name it I did it, knock on doors, stand outside shopping centers handing out flyer's pins etc, in all weather defending my candidates Including Bush 1 & 2 both times each. Sometimes getting spit on & getting cursed out often.

But this put a stop to all that. I won’t overlook this & other Johnny Sutton betrayals. All real Conservatives should send a very real message to the GOP to get back in step with the base or face losing power. Now is the time to send this message, during the primary's, before it’s to late.
