Iraqi security forces, backed by Sunni tribesmen, clashed Sunday with a united of al-Qaida fighters near the Syrian border, killing at least 21 members of the terrorist organization, police said.
The fighting, near the border town of Qaim in Anbar province began after midnight and lasted several hours, said Col. Tariq Youssef, a police official in the city, 320 kilometers (200 miles) west of Baghdad.
The colonel said "a small number of the tribal fighters suffered minor wounds" and all 21 al-Qaida members in the unit were killed.
"The operation was launched by police forces backed by the Abu Faraj and Abu Shaaban tribes against members of al-Qaida," he said. "We believe that they were trying to flee the country because they are surrounded now in Anbar by the growing number of tribes that reject al-Qaida."
An increasing number of Sunni tribes in Anbar province, a stronghold of the insurgency, have joined with the government and U.S. military to expel al-Qaida from the region.

And that would be good, too - if true. I happen to somewhat mistrust the round numbers.
Probably a fair bit looser then our ROEs.
Then you are accusing US special forces of bullshitting, because they were on the ground right there with the tribal fighters, the 1920 Revolution, the Iraqi police and Army fighting the terrorists.
When the illogical demented leftists bemoan that we are fighting an unjust war in Iraq remember that the fight is against terrorists and Al-Quaida....the USA is not fighting the current sovreign nation of Iraq.... it's terrorists you Leftist lamebrains.... (not you Arms.. eheheh)
21, in 2007, dead, while a hundred times that many entered every prior year since the liberation. Nice job. Good work. Really put on the thinkin' cap that time. ;')
But seriously, this is good news. It's not the first time an interdiction has taken place, but it is frustrating that the border wasn't sealed right after Saddam's statue fell. It's a little surprising that the [characterization deleted] didn't manage to make a getaway, really -- other than the fact that a bunch of jihadists were probably out to kill him also. ;')
Thanks jmc1969!
She's out of line....just like her SF constituents...
By the way that is a picture up top of Shiek Sattar. Without him creating the Anbar Salvation Council there would be almost no police in Anbar and there would be few if any tribes fighting al-Qaeda.
A happy one at that.
This won't be a popular idea, may seem like a crank idea in fact, but I believe that there's little coverage because A) the partisan media shills don't want one of their party leaders portrayed as a surrender monkey, and B) (the crank part) Pelosi is there to let the Syrians know that the Dhimmicrats are not going to let anybody slide, so they'd all better shape up. Whatever else the beeotch may be, she is *not* John Kerry.
I don't know...I think this is what the Iraq Study Group suggested....and the dems have used their suggestions to hammer Prs. Bush.
Because Pres. Bush did NOT follow this particular suggestion by the Iraq Study Group the DEMS are going to do it for him.
Dianne Feinstein was on CNN this morning, and Wolf Blitzer asked her about Pelosi's trip to Syria, after the State Dept. said they didn't "approve"....
DiFi said that the DEMS are going to negotiate with these countries "because the President isn't doing it".
IOW...they are taking foreign policy away from the Executive Branch of government...which is against the Constitution.
Gee, I wonder what the count is? I'm sure 21 will be added to the total and reported on the nightly news... Not..
Thanks. He looks like a real ball of fire. :') The hanging of Saddam Hussein shook things loose, I believe. FIrst, al-Sadr is widely believed to have carried out the hanging as the denouement of a feud; second, the gov't in Baghdad then (finally) gave the go-ahead for the US to bust up the Mahdi army, and al-Sadr fled like the overweight cowardly demagogue that he is.
The third reason is, there's a widespread belief that Iran will be a lot more effective in launching an insurgency in Iraq, given the widely-believed myth of what they accomplished through their Hizzie proxy in Lebanon. This is genuinely alarming to the Sunnis.
The Sunni leaders could have been on board with this long ago. As they come aboard now, I think we'll all see how smart it was not to shoot them all down like dogs.
Of course, I still would have preferred that, but that's just me. ;')
Heh... too bad that there's no way for them to make that stick, eh? Just more bloviation, bombast, and grandstanding.
BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM !!!!!!!!
and will have consequences..........Dubya will get his back up on this one
