Run Fred Run

If Republicans want star power, street smarts and likeability rolled into one, they could do a good deal worse than the former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson...

He is clearly the candidate Democrats most fear. He is an articulate (whoops) conservative who also is quick on his feet and brings the gravitas and tough-mindedness that we need in the presidency.

He is used to the give and take of Washington politics, knowledge which would make him more effective than President Bush in managing the Democratic attack machine. He has also thrived as a conservative in a Hollywood culture that can be unforgiving toward anyone to the right of Bill Clinton.

These are all good reasons for Thompson to consider running. But there is one overriding reason. His nation needs him.

Obama is charismatic and Hilary is shrewd, but neither of them are equipped to fight the war that this nation will face over the next decade. The Democratic Party's treatment of President Bush since the moment he was sworn in underscores that they are not serious about solving problems or winning the war. The current scandal-mongering on even petty issues suggests to me they are not a party to be trusted with issues of war and peace...

Thompson has the charisma, the toughness and the political aptitude to move the nation forward at home and abroad. And he seems a genuinely good guy with conservative values.

It is my guess that he would run away with the Republican nomination if he entered the race. And that he would be a formidable force against any Democratic contender. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if liberal Hollywood started offering him major movie deals in the hopes of keeping him out of the race...

"Fred has plenty of time."

He needs it, too.

I think this is a tall hurdle to jump...
Thompson is looking into his contract obligations to "Law & Order" and talking with producers about how his run could affect the franchise. Election law requires equal air time for candidates. If enforced, the law could mean that more than 100 episodes over the past five seasons of "Law & Order" and its various spinoffs might have to be removed from the airwaves during Thompson's run—or other candidates could demand equal air time. (But not their own show, says former Federal Election Commission official Larry Noble)

You've just got to know that the dem's attorney's looking at this, as well.

I wonder if this means that all L&O episodes must be removed, or just the ones Fred was in? The former seems impossible, the latter seems doable.

I'm also wondering if the dems would try to make the case that even right now, if he runs, the current episodes should have been removed.

Honestly, this could become a nightmare for us.

:O)

If only the episodes with Fred in them need be removed, I agree. But if all of them must be removed, then how?
And does it cover only those shown in the U.S.? L&O is pushed out worldwide. First run and syndication, it's reach is vast.

I see the race as follows:

Rudy Guiliani is a vote AGAINST Hilary Clinton, it is not a vote for Guiliani.

I'm willing to bet that most of those who favor Guiliani on this board if honest with themselves would agree.

They'll figure something out. How many minutes of air time does Fred Thompson appear in an episode of L&O? One? How hard can it be to block out those moments and do a voice over with stills of the preceding scene, or a clip of the city traffic, or someone on the phone in conference with some dubbed in substitute for Fred?
If they can shorten an episode by 30 sec, they can sell another 30 secs to a sponsor, no?
And if they can do something clever or amusing with that time they must fill...hey, there are people who enjoy watching bloopers. Moonlighting used to fill time with outtakes, I recall.
If they want to, they can make lemonade here.
