The Back Story: Edwards Surges - Rudy Slumps
WNBC ^ | 3/29/07 | staff

Posted on 03/29/2007 2:41:13 PM PDT by pissant

A new Time Magazine poll out Thursday has a lot of interesting (and not terribly surprising) numbers. They include low levels of support for President Bush, a big majority favoring withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq before September 2008, and a majority believing Bush is trying to "cover up" what happenned in the firing of U.S. Attorneys.

We draw you attention to the Presidential race, though, and the strong bump John Edwards has gotten since the attention surrounding his wife's cancer recurred. Time finds the Democratic Primary race this way:

Clinton at 38%, Obama at 30% and Edwards at 28%.

On the Republican side, Time shows Rudy Giuliani's Republican Primary numbers sinking back to reality after he ran 20 points ahead of John McCain. Following the drip, drip, drip of details about him including his son not talking to him and his third wife being on her third husband, Giuliani stills leads McCain, but now it's 35%-22%.

Keep in mind, however, it is only March, 2007

I imagine that there are many young liberals who "proudly" voted in the current Democrat Congressional Majority...who will see on full display the horror of what they've done. And hopefully that will change many minds.

You're missing the point. And you didn't quote what I said earlier in that post. That some groups are quite insulated and so a better sampling of the American voter is a broad-based sampling which is what we've seen in most national polls.

God, living in this republic is like be on a ship of fools casted adrift on an endless ocean. Sometimes I feel like shouting "is there anyone out there with at least two neurons in their head capable of having a semi intelligent thought?"

I'd LOL if it weren't so pathetic. Your comment is so true. I know people who are actually proud of not following the news.

The 1 percenters like Paul and Hunter

Ron Paul is not at 1%.

Clinton, Giuliani lead in national polling (RON PAUL NOW UP TO 6% amongst Republican Women!)

Amongst declared GOP candidates, Ron Paul is already in 4th place after Rudy, McCain, and Romney. Already ahead of Tommy Thompson, Huckabee, Hunter, Tancredo, and Gilmore.

McCain and Romney have stalled; Ron Paul is rising. Most recent national polling data.

Hey, his wife is dying; lets vote for him. He's a victimmmmm....
***

This brings to mind the Wellstone Funerally, only this time the advantage is being sought prior to Edwards' wife's death. I guess if he works it right, and has Mrs. Edwards work hard enough on his campaign, he can have her die shortly before Super Duper Tuesday, and gain enough sympathy votes to get the nomination. Of course, if word of this plan gets out Hillary and Obama will have to get people close to them to agree (or not) to die so that they can have competing funerallies.

I used to believe that democrat politicians ran for office in order to implement liberal policies. While the implementation of their policies may be a nice by-product of their election to office, I am becoming convinced that all democrat politicians really care about is getting into office and holding power. I am sure there is a fair amount of that on the GOP side, too, but GOP candidates frequently have a fair amount of power outside the political realm before running for office, and GOP candidates seldom shy away from debating the issues. Dems, on the other hand, retreat from answering the hard questions, preferring to attack the questioner, or anyone close by who disagrees with them.

Not much of a revelation, perhaps, but the brazenness with which the dems show their devotion to winning at all costs, with no real concern about the people or the issues, ought to be astounding (but it isn't, somehow).

Okay, he's at 3% in a poll with over a 5% margin of error.

Oh yeah well let's just brush what I said under the rug then, and ask President Gore and President Kerry what they think about those broad-based sampling polls. I'm sure they will agree with you.

Who is brushing what you said under the rug?

Another freeper said that the Rudy fans here are more pro Rudy than the general population.

I asked where there was evidence of that.

You didn't answer that and neither has anyone else.

................As much I hate Rudy's liberalism, he is infinitely superior to the literal hell that would be a Clinton presidency.

My sentiments exactly. I get a major gag reflex just thinking about it.

Polls show what the pollster wants them to. If Rudy gets the nod the dems win it's that simple.

Rudy is the front runner only because the MSM says that he is. You are deluding yourself if you think he can win.

Peach, I've seen you post that reference to Alan Keyes and this site numerous times and I think you are being very evasive because you know that it is a strawman argument. Whether you acknowledge it or not, I hope you do realize the argument is just a piece of faulty logic.

I think everyone here is more pro-candidate of their choice than the general population. At this point, most of the general population doesn't support one candidate over the other, some of them just sound better than others to them if you ask.

I don't think that FR is as insular as you believe it to be because we have a broad-based cross section of conservative voters living across the US and even around the world posting here. I think the amount of opposition you see to Rudy here is going to closely correlate with the opposition he will have nationwide when this race really heats up. I think that Rudy's supporters are sticking their heads in the sand in denial over it.

I wonder how many of the ruling elite we could bump off using the "competition by death" approach? Maybe competing candidates would try to up the ante to show they were on the higher moral ground of caring about the death of an unfortunate person close to them.

If FR isn't as insular as I think, how do you explain that freepers from all across the country voted in large numbers for Alan Keyes to be the candidate in 2001 and yet across the country in the real world he never registered in polls beyond some marginal percentage? I'm amused that you think that's some kind of strawman argument.

And I must say that judging by the people I've talked to at our local GOP meetings, the people who support Rudy strongly support him. That's a pretty insular group too.

You have no way of knowing how strongly people are supporting Rudy across the country and neither do I. But judging by his positioning in the polls, how strongly he is supported by people I know and by me, I think you're wrong.

Regardless, you've now spent an inordinate amount of time trying to defend another freeper's post which said that Rudy fans here are more pro Rudy than the rest of the population. That freeper didn't even defend her own post and try as you might, all you can offer is your opinion in this matter, not facts. Which is fine. But let's not pretend that you have any hard data to back up that opinion.
