Dr. James Dobson: Fred Thompson 'Not a Christian'
NewsMax.Com ^ | Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Posted on 03/28/2007 2:36:11 PM PDT by SubGeniusX

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson has dealt a potentially devastating blow to Fred Thompson’s presidential aspirations, saying the former senator is not a Christian.

"Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson – considered the most politically powerful evangelical figure in the U.S. – said in a phone call to Dan Gilgoff, senior editor at U.S. News & World Report.

"[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian. At least that’s my impression.”

Thompson’s spokesman Mark Corallo took issue with the statement.

"Thompson is indeed a Christian,” he said. "He was baptized into the Church of Christ.”

Focus on Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger sought to clarify Dobson’s statement, telling Gilgoff that while Dobson didn’t believe Thompson belonged to a non-Christian faith, he "has never known Thompson to be a committed Christian – someone who openly talks about his faith.

"We use that word – Christian – to refer to people who are evangelical Christians. Dobson wasn’t expressing a personal opinion about his reaction to a Thompson candidacy.”

Thompson has said he is leaving the door open for a presidential run. A Gallup-USA Today poll released on Tuesday has the Tennessee Republican running third behind Rudolph Giuliani and John McCain among Republicans and Republican-leaning voters.

Although Dobson has not endorsed any Republican presidential candidate, he told Gilgoff that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was the "brightest guy out there” and "the most articulate politicians on the scene today.”

Gilgoff is the author of the new book "The Jesus Machine: How James Dobson, Focus on the Family, and Evangelical America Are Winning the Culture War.”

In the 2004 race, Dobson gave the first public presidential endorsement of his career, supporting George Bush. Bush got almost 6 million new white evangelical votes in 2004 that he didn’t get in 2000.

Also to be considered "evangelical" one must act on the great commission spreading this faith to others openly so that they might come to saving faith. In my experience evangelical includes people in all denominations that see it as a personal mission to evangelize in this way.

I LOVE my religion, as I'm sure you love yours. Some don't have the level of confidence it seems, that's why the Catholics are attacked as cults and non-Christians. EVERY non-Catholic is from a break-away church who was founded by humans....I have the list....I can give names and dates and where they started.

Well actually the Roman branch broke away from the Church itself.

Even though the big boys (Pope and Patriarch) have forgiven each other...lots of us are not convinced.

Sorry, but we part ways. Peter was OUR first POPE....and the chain goes from him to Benedict.

"Parents INSTINCTIVELY knew how to raise children, then Spock wrote his book and the 60's generation women bought the book, followed every word...and VOILA! RUINATION!!"

Instinct does not have a rational foundation, nor is it an appropriate source for a rational plan to teach and develop the capacities of a sentient rational being. It's not rational to follow the directions in a book regarding child rearing blindly. Regardless, it is not logical to conclude that the children of said parents did not become capable rational actors. It is certainly not true that they are all "ruined".

Yes we do...often.

Peter is the loving disciple of the Lord not a pope...and to equate any pope with St. Peter sounds blasphemous to me.

I guess I'm not a "Christian" then...at least not Dobson's type.

A very simple answer to your question is: Romans 10:9!!!

Do you believe that in your heart???

I don't have to buy Newts repentance.

I can't know what is in his heart, just what he conveniently told Dobson.

Thankfully, as much as it appears he'd like to be, Mr. Dobson is not the final arbiter of who is a Christian and who is not.

Do you believe that in your heart???

I happen to be in communication with the one who knows what is in my heart. What anyone else thinks or believes is in my heart is not important.

You should really know something about the churches of Christ before you start spewing untruths such as those in your post. I have been a member of the church of Christ for about 35 years and I have attended numerous congregations all over the south and southwest, and I have never heard or seen or even sniffed a hint of the untruths you stated above.

And members of the churches of Christ that I know, and I know a lot, do not believe they are the only ones going to Heaven. They believe that anyone who follows the Word of God is going to Heaven.

"I respect Dr. Dobson very much. He has good intuition."

Really? Good intuition? Ted Haggard was his protegee, and his intuition missed that one by a country mile.

I'd say his wisdom ought to be in question. The kind of statements under discussion here are not helpful.

Can you show me in the Commandments in the Bible the one that says we must go to Mass??? Catholic writing not Bible. Catholics may go by what priest tell them or what they read in Catholic writings but Most Christians go by the Bible.

Why are you so up tight? Where did I say I thought that you think you don't sin. We are all sinners no matter what denomination we belong to. That's in the Bible. I think you misunderstood me. As far as incorrect info goes, I have a Bible. I'm pretty sure it's correct.
