American forces in Iraq now hold some 300 prisoners tied to Irans intelligence agencies, Pajamas Media learned from both diplomatic and military sources....
More likely, the large number of Iran-linked prisoners reflects a change in tactics following the arrival of Multinational Force Iraq commander Army Gen. David H. Petraeus. Previously, Iranians and other foreigners could not be picked up without a provable connection to terrorism. Now, American and allied forces are encouraged to seize militants based on a reasonable suspicion of involvement in insurgent attacks. This is consistent with Iraqi law.
The number of bombings associated with Iran-backed groups seems to be declining, although both sources cautioned it is too soon to be sure.
The Pentagon received considerable pressure from officials in the State department and CIA to release some or all of the Iran-linked prisoners to facilitate discussions between Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Iranian officials. Apparently, Gen. Petraeus sharply disagreed, saying that he intends to hold the prisoners until they run out of information or we run out of food, according to our sources who heard these remarks through channels.

Let's not fall into the "10,000 palis for 1 Israeli soldier" nonsense.
they could be released to a cemetery, and indeed should be.
"Gen. Petraeus sharply disagreed, saying that he intends to hold the prisoners until they run out of information or we run out of food, according to our sources who heard these remarks through channels."
Petraeus for president!
Well that is a good start.
Gen. Petraeus sharply disagreed, saying that he intends to hold the prisoners until they run out of information or we run out of food,
Petraeus to State Dept: "take a hike".
Release them from 10,000 feet over the Iranian parlament.
Petraeus to State: Butt out!
Please, please, please....what ever they do, please don't put panties on their heads.
I think that we should tell the Iranians to release the British prisoners or else their spies will be returned in body bags.
What Rumsfield, Abiziaid, and Casey did for several years in Iraq.
1. Run a catch and release program for Iranians.
2. Let the State dictate what should be military decisions.
3. Let politicians in Washington dictate the ROEs and even then they did not clarify them for the troops.
4. They didn't send enough troops and even then they put them all on giant FOBs far away from the Iraqi public.
5. They refused to deal with the Medhi Army and badr and chose to make deals with Sadr even after he declared war on the coalition rather then deal with him. They also let him pack the Iraqi police with Medhi Army militiamen
I could go on and on. But, suffice it to say in a few short weeks Petraeus has undone a great deal of what Abiziad, Casey, and Rummy did. They will all do down in history very badly.
[From what I undertand, Petraeus was working himself ragged in Iraq and was HIGHLY respected by President Bush for all his accomplishments...he was brought back to get him rested up...therefore, his appointment must of been in the works for months...and due to the respect Bush has for him...he has the ability to call the shots in Iraq!!!...;o)]
300? Like the movie '300.'
Wait a minute, V.P. Cheney has been harrassed by the Dems and the media for allegedly pressuring intell agents, although it was never proven, but I don't see or hear anyone from those two groups criticizing the CIA or the State Dept. for their actions in this matter. Oh wait, how stupid of me, those State Dept. and CIA people must be friends of Val and Joe Wilson.
Start shooting them one by one.
either that or Iraq is giving the Senate immigration proposal a dry run for us.
I seem to recall that during the Civil War, 600 Confederate officers were held as POWs and used as human shields. They became known as The Immortal 600. Perhaps we should use these Iranians in a similar manner. Make them walk ahead of military convoys, or send them in first when doing searches to see if a place is booby-trapped or not. I'm not well-versed in todays' military tactics or procedures, but it seems they could be used somewhere as human shields.
"...to seize militants based on a reasonable suspicion of involvement in insurgent attacks."
I think they should loosen the standard to "Some evidence".
