This morning, I cited reports being promoted by the pro-Romney blog Evangelicals for Mitt suggesting that Fred Thompson ran his two campaigns for Senate in Tennessee as a pro-choicer. Not so, National Right to Life executive co-director Darla St. Martin just told me.
St. Martin said that she went down to Tennessee in 1994 to speak with Thompson personally when he first ran for Senate, and that she determined he was against abortion.
"I interviewed him and on all of the questions I asked him, he opposed abortion," St. Martin said. She told me that the group went on to support him in that election, and his record reinforced for her that their determination was correct.
"He has a consistent voting record that is pro-life," she said.
On the NRLC website, they archive their congressional ratings back to 1997, so they include six of his eight years in the Senate. Thompson took the pro-life position on every vote he cast on the abortion issue.

This issue alone would get him elected!
"Evangelicals for Mitt" might as well call themselves "Christians for False Prophets". Now, you might want to support Mitt on the grounds of political expediency, but to do it as an Evangelical is to never have cracked a Bible.

In my opinion, this is THE issue that matters the most (without the basic right to life, no other rights matter if one isn't born to exercise them!) So this is GREAT news for those supporting Fred.
I heard him on Paul Harvey talking about the border problem.
He did something rare in today's politics.
He made sense.
The thing that has me most excited about Fred Thompson is listening him fill in for Paul Harvey on the radio. He is able to articulate common-sense positions and values in a folksy and likeable way. Almost Reagan-esque.
Given the hostile media climate that any conservative candidate faces, communication skills are a huge climate. Anyone conservative who has less than perfect diction will be characterized in the press as dumb. Any conservative who is articulate but too glib will be characterized in the press as mean. What Reagan was able to do, and Thompson might be able to do, is come across in a manner that people will see both characterizations as unfair.
If Thompson were to become a successful candidate (and it's a big if right now), his stints on Paul Harvey might be viewed as an opportunity to hone his ideas and phrasng in a manner similar to Reagan's work as a spokesman for GE.
Fredheads should bookmark this article and reference it every time some Minion for Mitt or Rudynista throws the "Fred flip-flopped on abortion" prevarication into a Fred thread.
This is solid evidence that he's been consitently pro-life.

This nation is NOT governed by the Bible or by the Book of Mormon. It IS supposed to be governed by the Constitution and subsequent laws.
I would expect any candidate to realize and observe that.
While we have yet to have a Jewish President, we have had two Supreme Court Justices; Cardoza and Brandeis.

Obviously you are a twit. The Constitution certainly places no limit on what religions can run for public office. Neither does it compel anyone to vote for satanists, scientologists, wiccans, santerists, or even mormons in disregard of their religious views. Puhlease, why don't you quote the exact line of the Constitution that says all religious tests are disallowed WHEN VOTING FOR A CANDIDATE. Since you cannot find such an article why don't you buy a clue and actually read the Constitution instead of pulling things out of your ear.
And while you might 'expect' candidates to be governed by the Constitution despite religious predilections, Mormons believe they are on the path to becoming Gods themselves. At what point do you think someone who thinks they are becoming a God might just decide they are more wise and powerful than something called the Constitution? I've seen it in Mormons before (one example being Harry Reid).
So, in short, don't come to a mental shootout carrying a peashooter.

I doubt that. BUT,...it knocks in the ground any issues of facillation on his part. Now other issues can be addressed by him. One hurdle down, many more to go. And this isn't a sprint.

I have the sense that whatever the void is in our party right now- it goes beyond policy and issues. Listening to Thompson I hear the void disappear. He's the real deal.

And he said openly and directly what he believes without filtering it through handlers first.
We know that the overwhelming majority of illegals come across the Mexican border. Fortunately, we’ve got someone who is all too willing to tell us what we should do about it — the president of Mexico Philipe Calderon. President Calderon doesn’t think much of our border policies. He criticizes our efforts to secure the border with things such as border fencing. He says that bottle necks at U.S. checkpoints hurt Mexican commerce and force his citizens to migrate illegally in order to make a living (and of course send money back to Mexico). He apparently thinks we should do nothing except make American citizens out of his constituents. Calderon also accused U.S. officials of failing to do enough to stop the flow of drugs in to the United States. Mexican politicians gave President Bush an earful of all of this during his recent trip to Mexico.
I think its time for a little plain talk to the leaders of Mexico. Something like:
hey guys, you’re our friends and neighbors and we love you but it’s time you had a little dose of reality. A sovereign nation loses that status if it cannot secure its own borders and we are going to do whatever is necessary to do so, although our policies won’t be as harsh as yours are along your southern border. And criticizing the U.S. for alternately doing too much and too little to stop your illegal activities is not going to set too well with Americans of good will who are trying to figure a way out of the mess that your and our open borders policy has already created.
My friends, it’s also time for a little introspection. Since we all agree that improving Mexico’s economy will help with the illegal-immigration problem, you might want to consider your own left-of -center policies. For example, nationalized industries are not known for enhancing economic growth. Just a thought. But here’s something even more to the point that you might want to think about: What does it say about the leadership of a country when that country’s economy and politics are dependent upon the exportation of its own citizens?

Very true. Back in the day, I used to do a LOT of sifting through voting data from the Senate. Fred Thompson was one of the most consistent pro-life votes, as well as being a solid conservative vote in the Senate in general.
Well, if this is true, I will owe the Senator an apology, since I referred to him a number of times as a pro-choicer after his trial balloon went up.
I was basing that view of him on numerous print references I saw from that time period that describe him as such.
I did give him credit for his pro-life votes, however, and wondered about that disconnect.
However, I will reserve a certain amount of judgment, personally, since I have seen certain folks from NRTL misrepresent some politician's positions in the past. Mr. Thompson's views toward the God-given and inalienable right to life are far from having been thoroughly vetted, in any case.
I agree. His votes in the Senate were pretty good, apart from McCain-Feingold-Thompson.
